I'm Rachel Barraza, Alan's wife of 10 years. Alan has been battling cancer in one form or another since 2020. He's fought brain cancer, thyroid cancer, a liposarcoma, and lung cancer. He is currently battling a new brain tumor.

These each have come with their own side effects, but seizures have been one of the most impactful to our family. Due to his ongoing seizures, Alan is not allowed to drive. As a result, we made the decision this spring for me to quit my job and move very close to Alan's work so that he could continue to go into the office by catching rides with co-workers, Ubering, or having me drive him.

Then at the end of July, Alan suffered a series of seizures. Upon coming out of the seizures, he had confusion and weakness in the left side of his body. He was taken to the hospital where they saw continued brain tumor growth and micro hemorrhages.

Doctors have been able to prevent any more seizures from happening, but he is regaining his strength to walk and move from his bed to a chair. His sodium levels also continue to be too high for him to be discharged. While still in the hospital, doctors also found a blood clot in his lung which needed to be surgically removed. Doctors are not sure when Alan will be able to be discharged from the hospital. Even after discharge, he will likely have many days in an inpatient rehab facility to continue to get all his strength back before coming home.

Alan is on FMLA at this time, and being supportive of his health needs has limited my ability to work full time.
