Austin left us too soon, but his impact was great on his family, friends, and the Portland community. In his memory, his family would like to set up a fund that will grant scholarships to deserving Raider Seniors for years to come.
Austin loved being a Raider. He was a state qualifier for tennis, a member of the trap team, and golf team. He also loved cheering on his brothers at football games. He will be remembered not only for his love of family but for his friends as well.
Below is his Obituary
Portland - Austin John Getchell, born February 28, 2006, decided to leave this life way too soon on March 28, 2022 at the age of 16. The loving son of Matt and Theresa Getchell of Portland, MI, he will be forever loved and missed by his parents and his two brothers: Ethan (20) and Haden (18). Austin is survived by his large Getchell family in Indiana and Florida along with his maternal grandparents, aunts, and cousins in Tennessee.
Cherished and adored by his family and friends, Austin was an active and engaged student at Portland High School. He was the "class clown" who would roll around the front of the room in a teacher's chair or banter back and forth with "dad jokes." He often made fashion statements with silly flamingo or Hawaiian shirts and even an orange jumpsuit. Austin also made Honor Roll, played tennis, and golf, a member of the Trap Team and enjoyed working out with his favorite trainer.
Austin was an intuitive, witty, "old soul" with an infectious grin who regularly listened to Billy Joel, Hall & Oates, and oldies from every decade. He loved to swim, duck-hunt, and fish with his dad and brothers, read fantasy/adventure novels with his mom, and watch Marvel Movies with his friends. His loyal friend-group enjoyed bonfires, movie premieres, fast-food runs in his bright blue Camaro, and of course, video games. Austin's feisty and fun spirit matched his red hair. Proud of being a "ginger," he embraced orange as his favorite color. He particularly adored his orange cat, Titan, aka Ty-Ty.
