The Argassi Stray Cats
Every local resident and holidaymaker has undoubtedly come across them; the stray cats of Argassi. ️
These sweet, often affectionate stray cats are essentially left to fend for themselves.
During the summer, they are generously cared for by tourists; they receive plenty of dry and wet food, they are noticed, and they are loved. ️
But as soon as the last tourist flights depart in September/October ✈️, these cats are left behind alone. While some local residents do feed them here and there, there has never been a structural solution. Sadly, this has cost many stray cats their lives every winter. ❄️
In September 2025, an initiative was launched by three Dutch cat lovers , in collaboration with a handful of indispensable local residents, to create a sustainable plan for the stray cats of Argassi.
A Facebook and Instagram page were set up , and through these platforms, funds were raised to feed the cats throughout the winter and spring at four fixed locations in Argassi.
Feeding stations were also purchased, allowing the cats to eat in a dry and protected environment, with a consistent supply of food. ️
During the summer, the cats still depend on the help of tourists ✈️, as the local residents supporting and running this initiative are simply too busy managing their supermarkets, hotels, or restaurants.
With this initiative, we aim to ensure that the Argassi Stray Cats receive sufficient food during the winter and spring ❄️. We also strive to raise funds to sterilize as many Argassi cats as possible (in collaboration with Heart4Cats) —the only long-term solution to end the suffering of stray cats.
Will you support our initiative? On behalf of us, the local community, and especially the Argassi Stray Cats: thank you! ❤️
