AKT was founded in 1989 to combat the growing problem of homelessness among the LGBT community. In 2012 they were able to open their first Purple Door, the UK’s first emergency safe house for LGBT youth.
I have many friends in the UK and abroad who have experienced hate and discrimination from their own family. For some they can no longer return home having been verbally or physically abused and disowned. We can so often take our own family and friends for granted, forgetting that for many people ‘home’ no longer exists.
This charity is a life-line for many young people in the UK as it provides them not only with the necessary emotional support, but also a physical space that they can come to to feel safe.
