The Ace of Love

2. Logline

The Ace of Love is a haunting and poetic character study about redemption, guilt, and human connection, following a terminally ill homeless veteran confronting his past and seeking salvation in small acts of compassion, before his time runs out.

3. Synopsis

The Ace of Love follows Ace, a weathered, terminally ill veteran living on the streets of Philadelphia. Estranged from society and haunted by visions of his younger self, Flynn, Ace struggles with the weight of his past and the trauma of war. As he attempts to find peace through small acts of kindness, he’s repeatedly rejected by those he tries to help.
Flynn, an embodied voice of Ace’s inner shame and self-hatred, taunts him at every turn, challenging his quest for redemption. Along the way, Ace encounters Bob, a man on the brink of suicide. Their brief connection becomes a turning point, proof that even the most broken souls can offer hope to others.

Set against the historic and modern landmarks of Philadelphia, this poetic, street-level story builds to a final act of reconciliation between Ace and his fractured younger self. The film closes with Ace finding peace inside a movie theater, where he smiles in a rare moment of stillness, his final act of self-love and forgiveness.
The Ace of Love is an exploration of trauma, pride, and human connection. It’s a film that asks: Can we forgive ourselves for the worst thing we’ve done, and is redemption ever truly out of reach?

4. What Makes This Film Unique?

The Ace of Love explores PTSD, homelessness, and terminal illness through a surreal yet grounded lens. It reframes trauma not with pity, but with poetry. The antagonist isn’t society or circumstance, but a man’s younger self, his unhealed inner child.
Unlike many films about veterans, this story avoids political statements, focusing instead on the existential aftermath of violence and the quiet courage of everyday compassion. Set entirely in Philadelphia, its iconic locations serve as emotional backdrops, from the LOVE statue to the Ben Franklin Bridge, infusing the city with narrative purpose.
The minimal dialogue, symbolic imagery, and haunting sound design echo the traditions of films like The Wrestler and A Ghost Story, but its psychological structure is deeply personal, nearly theatrical, hinging on the dual performance of Ace and Flynn. This intimacy, paired with cinematic scope, makes it both emotionally raw and visually resonant.

5. Use of Grant Funds
Funds from GoFundMe will be used to support:
  • On-location production costs in Philadelphia (permits, transportation, meals)
  • Equipment rental, including camera, sound, and lighting for a 7–10 day shoot
  • Insurance and safety personnel, particularly for scenes on bridges or public locations
  • Post-production editing and sound design, crucial for the film’s psychological impact

We are committed to an efficient shoot with a lean crew. This funding will directly allow us to begin principal photography in mid-August, aligning with our production schedule.
