The 9pm Stilgherrian’s Dramatic Decamp to Campsie

After 15 years in Australia’s Blue Mountains, Stilgherrian is moving back to Sydney. The core moving costs and most of the disruptions are now covered, thank you, but more is needed to cover this transformation, a backlog of health-related tasks, and more terrible podcasts.

Hello. I’m Stilgherrian. You may know me as a freelance media producer, journalist, podcaster, and more — all part-time these days for various health reasons.

(You’ll also know that my name is only the one “Stilgherrian”, but hey, databases.)

In 2011 I moved to Wentworth Falls, “just for a few weeks”. And a decade and a half later I was still there. Finally, a good friend has invited me to share his newly-purchased apartment in Campsie in Sydney’s inner south-west.

But cashflows are... not good. Mostly because my freelance work has dried up temporarily.

So I’m seeking your support for the removals — both pulling a household’s worth of goods out of storage (about $1,500) and transferring my everyday possessions down from the Mountains (around $500), as well as something to live on while all this is happening (see below).

There’s bound to be some random unexpected costs as well.

A lot of the stuff I've had in storage for all this time is no longer needed. Some I’ll sell. Some I’ll give away. And everyone who’s ever pledged more than $20 to my projects — in this or any other campaign or just randomly — will be able to join the SEKRIT livestreams or whatever other first-bite methods I invent to give you priority.

Most of those boxes contain books. But there’s also vinyl records, CDs, probably some DVDs, and who knows what else.

As for my living costs, February was a bit of a write-off, and March and April haven’t been much better.

This crowdfunder also replaces the usual quarterly campaign I’d been running on Pozible, the most recent one being The 9pm Summer Series 2025.

When you contribute to this crowdfunder, you’ll also be eligible for the kinds of rewards mentioned over there.

I therefore set the initial target at $5,000. That included the moving costs and me making four special-guest episodes of The 9pm Edict podcast in autumn. We’d also knock out a couple episodes of Another Untitled Music Podcast.

This includes the business costs of running the podcast as well as my own living costs.

That first target has been reached, so I set a second target that would in theory also help with some specialist medical costs to address my sleep problems, a whole bunch of dental work which has been neglected (last estimate was over $2,000), maybe a new pair of glasses, and more.

Hence, a second goal of $9,000, which would help cover all of those things as well as four more special-guest episodes of The 9pm Edict for a total of eight in what I’ll call the mid-2026 series.

Today, as I update this on 20 April, we’re 96% of the way to that target but nearly all of those funds have been absorbed by living and moving costs so far. I have therefore set a fresh third target of $13,000.

Please consider pledging your support. And if you have any questions, please let me know.

So that’s the story for now. I’m Stilgherrian. Wash your hands.

Update 20 April: Here’s a fresh timeline. I’ve left the previous one below for reference.

  • 21 April: The Great Unboxening | 02 livestream, 9pm AEST, with the first batch of books.
  • 28 April: Another livestream, this time with the first batch of vinyl records.
  • More to come...

Update 26 March: The initial target has been achieved! The main part of the move has taken place. And now I’m trying to settle in. Thank you so much.
  • 13 March: Settlement happened. Snarky Platypus is now the owner and I’m officially a lodger.
  • 14 March: We visited the apartment, tried to work out which keys opened what, observed that the range hood needs replacing, and moved in two furniture items he’d bought
  • 16 March: My big packing day at Wentworth Falls.
  • 17 March: Move all my things from storage to the new address. In the evening there will be a brief livestream to launch The Great Unboxening to give an indication of what will be happening, with more to follow over subsequent days. This is also when I’ll start inhabiting the apartment.
  • 18 March: Test all the appliances which have been in storage, and a pre-unboxening to plan what will happen when.
  • 19 March: Kept in reserve in case I don’t finish the Wentworth Falls packing and need to head up there for the day.
  • 22 March: Move all my everyday things down from the Blue Mountains. This formally severs my link with the place after more than 15 years.
  • 25 March: Snarky Platypus’ big moving day, but that’s not my problem.
  • 26 March: Various appliances arrive, and initial shopping is done.
  • 27 March: We cook ourselves a welcome dinner, but after this the unpacking continues.
  • 3 April: Good Friday, by which time I hope I’m completely settled in and I can relax across the long weekend.
