*** This will be the only fundraising channel for James Brooks***
There's debate about how serious Covid-19 is and how much assistance people afflicted are getting. The answers are simple: the virus is very serious and the afflicted are not getting enough. James Brooks, my uncle, has been in the hospital since May 23rd with Covid-19. He was not one of the people who didn't take this virus seriously, but this virus doesn't care what people think about it. It attacks who it can. So far, we have accumulated over $20,000 in hospital rehabilitation costs, and that number will continue to climb daily. This GoFundMe is to pay for James's hospital bills so that he may remain in recovery for as long as needed.
James didn't know that he was sick at first because he took the recommended steps that the state of Georgia laid out for its residents. He was finally convinced to go to the hospital and was immediately diagnosed with Covid-19. He spent the next couple of weeks in an induced coma. At one point, the doctors said that there was nothing more they could do and it was time to put him in "end of life comfort care." We demanded that they keep trying, and about 2 weeks later, James’s vitals started improving and his body started fighting on its own (Uncle James is a Vietnam Vet; he doesn't know how to quit fighting).
Currently, James is slowly being weaned off of dialysis, and he's being weaned off of the ventilator (he actually breathed on his own for a full day yesterday, 8/9/2020). He's being weaned off of oxygen as well. The road to recovery is hard, but what they don't tell you is that once you're out of a coma, hospitals want you out. James has Medicare and supplemental insurance; as a Vet, he also gets Medicaid and VA benefits; and yet none of them cover the remainder of his road to recovery. It costs $800 per day for his rehabilitation. We are being asked to leave the hospital if we can't pay this daily fee, or they will charge it against his home and limited assets. We need help.
If you didn't realize you know someone who's been affected by Covid-19, now you do. This isn't the first member of our family to get sick, and although we've suffered losses, he won't be the first to survive. He needs more assistance to do so, though. We are here to answer any questions; if there's anything you can do to help, please do. After months of heartbreaking news, we are finally headed in the right direction. Any money raised will be used to continue James’s rehab for as long as it takes. Thank you.
