We have all experienced a life-changing story or a life-changing event, usually when we have least expected it. The next chapter in the Dorsett-Zahren family life-changing story is being written on February 19, 2019 when one of our dearest family friends is donating her kidney to Madison.
Madison started dialysis in December 2017, we have known since infancy that the day would come that she would need a kidney transplant. Of course, we were thinking it would be later, you know later in life…not when she was 21 and in college! But her body had a different plan, and in 2017 her kidneys decided they were pretty much done.
Once she started dialysis, the medical team at the University of Washington suggested we go forward with a living donor. Thankfully, many of our family and friends were gracious enough to go through the testing and evaluation process. But it’s not an easy journey. The requirements are strict and not many people make it to the point of qualifying as a living donor.
Two weeks ago, our family got “the” call from the University of Washington medical center. They told us that on February 19th, Madison and one other recipient will participate in a paired kidney exchange. This type of procedure occurs when a living kidney donor is incompatible with “their” recipient so they are matched with another donor/recipient pair who is also incompatible to each other. On this day, two live-donor transplants will occur simultaneously.
Our long-time family friend Cindy Olson is one of the donors. Cindy is also the mom of one of Madison’s birth buddies. There are not enough words of gratitude nor thankfulness that can even come close to showing our friend how much we are forever grateful for her selfless act. Thankfully, our medical insurance will pick up most, but not all, of her medical expenses; unfortunately, the time she will be required to miss work is not covered. We are initiating this campaign to benefit Cindy and her family by alleviating any unexpected financial adversities which may occur throughout this journey. Thank you in advance for your generous donation to this cause which is very near and dear to our hearts!
We are forever grateful to every single family member and friend that has been on this journey with us from the time Madison was diagnosed with kidney disease at three months to starting dialysis at 20 years old. And to Cindy Olson, you are an angel in our eyes and we are beyond blessed for your friendship, your love and most of all the life-saving gift to Madison.
