Georges Place Photo Album
You have probably found yourself on this page because you have experienced the magic of George’s Place under the caring attention of George and his crew on Patmos. I have been coming to paradise on earth, Patmos, for 45 years. For 41 of those years, we all got to enjoy the magic, the beauty and the love of George’s Place, no less the friendship and caring of George, his family and all the rest of the cast and crew at the best beach bar in the world, in the best bay on earth on the best island on the planet. Help us raise money to say a big thank you to George.
Starting in year one and for many of the first 12 years of George’s Place, I - joined later by my wife Alison - were lucky enough to have had the best summer job in between schools and school terms that one could imagine. The memories of some of the longest but most endearing days, and the first and biggest parties and special nights at George’s Place over that time, are some of the best memories of our lives.
Unfortunately, as of January 15, 2021, George’s Place as we know it is shutting down. This probably comes as a shock to many, as it was for us, but instead of dwelling on the sadness we want to acknowledge and remember the spontaneous love, deep laughter and special memories this place produced for many over its four decades in existence.
George’s Place was a safe haven for many - a place where you could show up and instantaneously be welcomed by the buzz of good vibes, the echoing laughter and the beach haze - under the watchful yet comforting eyes of Michalis, master of the loaded tray! A place where old friends could reminisce about past summers, where young ones would fall in love under the setting sun; a place that no matter what your religious or political views were, you were able to put them aside for a friendly yet competitive game of backgammon - or chess if you could talk your way into a chess set from the king of the kitchen, Wayne.
From barefoot kids running around with ice cream cones and platters of Tina’s - and Wayne’s - amazing pies to the full moon parties lasting till the breezy mornings or the late night deep conversations over a cold beer, a mojito or a fancy cocktail, the second you are at George’s, you feel welcomed and at home by all. If you have been visiting Patmos for a while, then you have had the honour of watching the island grow and reinvent itself while maintaining its beauty, tradition and charm. George’s Place was a big part of that for many. The heart of the physical building itself never changed, and even though many new faces surfaced over the years, many stayed the same. George's Place was an amazing playground for meeting new people from all walks of life, from the furthest corners of the world and even though it was always hard to say goodbye, it was exciting to know that by next summer you would again catch up over a frappe and apple pie. The famous George's Place saying goes .. “You have to leave to come back …” and for many that was the motivation needed to work towards another summer in Patmos.
For our family (like most), this cozy beach bar was a pivotal point for a lot of our happiest memories. And don’t forget that there would be no George’s Place without the legend himself - George Koronis. Without a doubt, George is one of the most hard working, kind, and resilient men I have come to know. His drive to uphold the magic of George’s Place lasted over 40 years and we could not thank him enough. If you were lucky enough to experience this wonderful place then you would know the effect it had on many. Although the George’s Place we know may be gone, the magic and priceless memories will last in our souls forever.
We felt the need to create this page to raise money and to honour the man himself - George. He sacrificed so much for 41 years to make sure that generations of families and friends could enjoy their summers on this magical island just that much more. I think it’s fair to say that his work ethic and love of what he does is nothing short of astounding and we thank him for the positive impact it has had on all of us.
We ask you , Patmos lovers and George’s Place patrons around the world, to help us thank George for this. The money that we are raising is our way of saying thank you and we want him to use these funds whichever way he would like. Whether this money goes towards securing a new spot for him on the island or simply to visit his kids and granddaughter in England - will be up to him. George - you deserve to relax and have some fun the way we all were able to because of you .. and George’s Place.
Every little bit helps, so please help George enjoy a little break on us - all of us - before he settles back down to the next chapter in his life. Contribute as much or as little as you can; there is no right number. Everyone will get to see the fruits of this gesture once it's all collected as we will make sure the handover to George is very well published. Your individual contribution can be made anonymously if you wish. As we are domiciled in Canada, the goal is set to $10,000 Canadian Dollars but of course we would all be thrilled if this target is surpassed.
From the bottom of our hearts and to the George's Place community around the world - THANK YOU.
We love you, George.
SIDE NOTE: I have just discovered that the donation screen asks for a "tip" or something like that for the organizer - when you are making a donation to the cause. I am not expecting a tip - in fact, I am asking you to not tip; we are collecting for George. I asked the GoFundMe people how to eliminate this feature but apparently that is not an option - so all you must do is simply change the tip option to "Other" and then just leave it empty :-)
