Dear Roo Family: This winter storm has created utter chaos for all of us (and our broader community)! How is it possible we have to endure this, too, after everything else in the past 12 months?!?
While most of us have just been trying to stay warm and/or devise effective toilet-flushing procedures, a dedicated group of workers have had to worry about those for their households AND keep our campus functional: the physical plant and dining/housekeeping/residential* staff.
Much of their efforts are behind-the-scenes, but they've truly been doing everything they can to make things better as fast as possible. So let's show some love for these members of our community whose labor is what's getting us through this awful experience!
The money we raise through this fundraiser will be used to buy Visa gift cards for the workers in the above categories. This money will be divided equally among these ~75 workers, so please give generously (as you are able)! We want each to receive an amount that sends a meaningful message of gratitude & solidarity.
[update #1, 2/18] Our original goal was to afford $50 gift cards, and we reached that goal! Our new goal is $75 gift cards (the goal amount includes service/activation fees). Any money we raise beyond that will be split equally and donated to the Grayson Crisis Center, Four Rivers Outreach, Family Promise, and Grand Central Station.
[update #2, 2/19] We reached our goal of being able to get $75 gift cards for our co-workers! Any additional money will go to the four organizations just mentioned. The new goal would allow us to donate $500 to each organization.
[update #3, 2/22] Based on feedback from several AC staff members and in consultation with college leadership, all of the money raised on this GoFundMe will be used to purchase gift cards for AC/Aramark employees. If you wish instead to donate to one of the community organizations, links are below. (If you donated previously and would like to specify a portion of your donation to go to one of these organizations, please email Jeremy Posadas directly.)
This fundraiser is being managed by Prof. Posadas. Dr. Kelly Reed (Pre-Health Director) and Dr. John Williams (College Chaplain) have agreed to be accountability partners to provide oversight and ensure transparency in the use of funds raised.
NOTE: Although Austin College is a not-for-profit institution, donations through this GoFundMe fundraiser are not tax-deductible.
*While we appreciate the work of RAs and other student staff in Res Life, they are not included as recipients here.
