Late on Saturday evening, sweet little Banana Rose, a miniature dachshund who helps teach yoga at an addictions recovery and treatment centre, and who brings sunshine to every man, woman, and child she’s ever met, had a run in with a hardened gang of street-wise, fruit tree-raiding, raccoons in her very own backyard.
Though my dad raced to the rescue and saved her life (and repeatedly fought off the beasts several times so we could get to the car for medical supplies and then to the vet), she sustained several gruesome wounds that will require a gauntlet of further consultations and significant healing time. And that’s the best case scenario.
The 20+ year emergency vet we saw had never seen such a wound; the metatarsal paw pad was torn completely off one foot, making it impossible to stitch up without cutting circulation and losing the foot entirely. Though the incredible vet did her best and is seeking advice on further action, in the meantime we aren’t sure if it will somehow heal on its own or require more drastic intervention. Either way, her care will be ongoing and exceedingly loving.
And so we are in a “wait and see” holding pattern while she begins to heal. She will require regular medical attention and as a single mother of three working more than full time and putting myself through a masters degree, with tuition and back to school approaching quickly, I’m humbly asking for help from those who may be able to do so.
Help come in so many forms and we’ve received so much love already that our hearts are full. If you happen to be in the position to contribute to Banana’s care financially, we would all greatly appreciate it.
The vet says she will need 2-3 appointments per week over the next month, ranging from $50-100 each, not including cost of further medications and treatments. Thank you, and much love to you my friends! Banana loves you, and so do the kids and I
