TGC Health Care Initiative

Hello Everyone!

My name is Sam Wynn and for the past 8 months I have been volunteering in Siem Reap, Cambodia as an ESL and Health teacher at The Global Child School (TGC) through Union College’s post-graduate Minerva Fellowship. My goal in creating this GoFundMe account is to raise $2,000 for The Global Child’s Health Initiative for my students and their families. The money raised will go directly to the following:

This money will provide the monetary support necessary for our partnership with the Siem Reap Women’s Resource Center (WRC), which will provide safe and free workshops for our students’ families on a variety of topics such as maternal and reproductive health, family planning, basic hygiene, disease prevention, HIV/AIDS education and understanding child development (just to name a few). The partnership with the WRC is an extension of the current health program being taught to the kids. It will allow the grandmothers, mothers, sisters and aunts of our students both safe and free access to information on a variety of important health care topics. The second series of workshops will be held for all family members of the TGC students by the WRC. They will focus on understanding child development, healthy relationships between students and their families and setting positive examples among other things. The money raised will also allow us to pay for and distribute basic hygiene products such as deodorant, menstruation products and soap for our students at TGC.

A bit more about TGC and Cambodia:

Cambodia is a country that is still suffering in the aftermath of war. Thousands of unschooled and underprivileged children beg for an income of less than one dollar a day, which they bring home to help their families. Given the circumstances it is hard for parents or guardians to allow the children go to school because it could cause the family to starve. But most of the children are still eager to learn. At The Global Child our goal is to give talented and intellegent underprivileged, former street working children the chance to obtain a thorough and well-rounded education by subsidizing each student with one dollar each day that they attend school. Essentially a form of micro-financing (only without repayment), this money goes directly back to their families to provide for the monetary loss they incur by sending our students to get an education at The Global Child rather than working or begging on the streets.

The Global Child is a standout non-profit organization because of the overall care provided for each of our students. If you go to TGC's website  the mission statement reads,  "The Global Child (TGC), founded in 2003, is a non-profit, non-political, non-partisan organization founded to save the lives of Cambodian street children. TGC, a 501(c )(3) organization, has its headquarters in Newport, Vermont, and has built and operates a small-scale school and safe-house in Siem Reap, Cambodia, in order to nurture, educate and mentor gifted but impoverished and/or orphaned street-children in Cambodia. The Global Child provides these children not only with an education but also with life skills, a cultural understanding of their country and its traditions, and training for employment and citizenship."

The Global Child is my family. This experience in Cambodia has been life changing  and I have learned innumerable lessons in compassion and gratitude from my students. It is my turn to try and give back to this incredible organization by providing the foundation to build TGC’s Health Initiative on.
