On 9/27 Lindsay kept Eva home from school because she was too exhausted to sit up. She has been feeling tired for weeks but yesterday it became extreme fatigue and shortness of breath. That morning, her mom took her to the ER where she didn’t even have the strength to sit upright. Without doing any blood tests the doctor dismissed it as a respiratory virus and sent her home. By 5pm Eva became lethargic and confused, mistaking her dad’s name and what school she went to.
At that point her mom's heart sank. Her gut told her something was really wrong despite what the ER doctor had said. She called the Childrens Hospital, and they advised her to call 911 immediately. As soon as the ambulance got there, they took her blood sugar, and it was over 400 – for a kid that should be under 100. She was in diabetic ketoacidosis. Her body was shutting down.
Lindsay had to follow the ambulance to the hospital - not being able to ride with her daughter. Coming over a hill she caught up with the ambulance and saw that it was pulled over. She froze, her heart breaking. The ambulance started moving again and Lindsay started breathing again. They had stopped to sedate Eva, who was confused and frantic.
Once at the hospital they stabilized Eva and flew her to the Childrens Hospital across town in a Flight for Life helicopter. She is in pediatric ICU now and slowly recovering. She is 11 years old and had developed type 1 diabetes. All of this is going to weigh heavily on Lindsay and their family. This family is already dealing with other health challenges with her son and Eva's dad. And they need our help. Please contribute to them and help them recover. They have struggled so much.
