April 8, 2019
OAKLAND (CBS SF) – One person was found dead following a two-alarm fire at a home in West Oakland early Monday morning.
According to Oakland Fire Battalion Chief Sean Laffan, the fire was reported at a Victorian home on 16th and Linden Streets around 5:45 a.m.
Firefighters arrived in less than five minutes and reported heavy amounts of smoke and flames coming from the second floor. Laffan said crews aggressively attacked the fire and located a victim who was reported dead at the scene. “The victim, unfortunately, did perish,” Laffan told KPIX 5.
Hello
I’m sure most of our friends and family know about the unfortunate events That’s is have occurred.
It started on Sunday we were talking to Darryl’s father about possibly going to an assisted living home because it was getting difficult for him to take care of himself, and with my disability, as I have MS, and with Darryl working 6 days a week, it would be hard to take care of him. Unfortunately, he developed asthma even though he stopped smoking some years ago. He did have other illnesses and had a few stints in the hospital, and that left him somewhat depressed because it meant loosing his independence. With that he started sneaking to occasionally smoke again.
He lived in the studio apartment of his family home. It was starting to be somewhat difficult for him to climb the staird, but he refused to move in with Darryl and his family. There was plenty of room.
Darryl and I had been discussing with him and amongst ourselves about possibly going into a Sr facility.
We were going to talk to him about it more on Monday. Early Monday morning about 5:30 am.Darryl woke up to seeing out our window what seemed to look like an orange reflection on the homes across the street, so Darryl frantically jumped up telling me he was going to see what was going on as he was not fully awake, so he thought maybe it was the end of the world, or a bomnb went off. When he went outside he saw flames shooting out his fathers window and the branches from the Big Redwood tree on the yard. I was in our bedroom and heard him and I looked out of the same window and saw
woke up to flames coming from the upstairs apartment which was Darryl’s Father’s apartment. Unfortunately he did not survive.
Darryl has been a pillar in his neighborhood and all of West Oakland for 54 years, and his father for the last 62 years. They’re both name stays in the community and in parts of Oakland.
Until the house is repaired the family is currently displaced. They have received some help from close friends and famikymembers, however they are in need of stable living arrangements until most of the rpairs have taken place. Darryl has a wife who has MS, and 2 sons one of which is a freshman in high school.
Any and all donations would be greatly appreciated to keep the family together during this unfortunate and grieving time.

The victim’s identity has not been released by authorities, but friends and relatives told KPIX 5 the victim was a man who lived at the home for more than six decades.
Neighbors who did not want to go on camera said the man was an Oakland native well known on his block and that his family passed down the home over generations.
Firefighters said it’s still unclear how the fire began and why the man was unable to get out.
“The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Our arson investigator is on scene and he is looking into the origin as well as the cause,” Laffan said.
