It is with heavy hearts we share that Neil E. Saari Jr. passed after suffering from the effects of Lewy Body Dementia, a little-known, but tragic and tough to witness disease. Though a family history of dementia had given us a glimpse of what might be in store for the future, Neil’s journey was unexpectedly fast-paced, with initial sporadic memory loss beginning less than 8 months ago, followed by rapid mental and physical deterioration over the past 2 months. This led to unexpected hospital, full-time hospice care and burial expenses. The emotional and financial impact on our family has been profound. In Neil’s memory, we are asking for support in covering these end-of-life expenses, which are being handled by his wife Dawn, with any funds raised beyond this goal being donated to the Lewy Body Foundation.

In many instances, the effects of Lewy Body Dementia manifest in symptoms that are similar to a combination of both Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. As with other Dementia related diseases, it appears to a person’s loved ones as though they are disappearing before their eyes.

On October 20th, Dawn took Neil to the hospital after she left work from her teaching position when she was called by the state police. They had been called to the Saari house in Preston when Neil had called them fearing intruders. After thoroughly sweeping the house they determined that there were no intruders, and then called Dawn. This turned out to be a hallucination caused by the Lewy Body Dementia. Over the next two and a half weeks, Neil was kept at Backus hospital, and then a Geriatric Psych unit where his family was not able to see him due to the Pandemic restrictions in place.

After consulting with his doctors, it was determined by his attending physicians that the best course of action was for Neil to return home for Hospice care. When Neil arrived at home on Sunday 11/8/2020, he was thankfully able to still speak in limited fashion with his family, and it was good for both he and his family to be able to communicate for the first time in over 2 weeks. Unfortunately, Neil’s Mental and Physical condition deteriorated much quicker than even his doctors had predicted, and Neil passed from the effects of the disease on November 19, 2020 11 days after returning home.

Neil was loved by his family, as well as the numerous friends and acquaintances he met over his 40+ year career in auto parts sales. He will be greatly missed.
