Alexander (AJ) was born on 10/27/03. For those of that remember it was a pretty rough day for San Diego. That’s when San Diego experienced the devastating Cedar Fire. So instead of having a normal trip to the hospital to deliver we drove though the smoke and ash trying to find roads that were open. He was born in the middle of the afternoon and that is when our whole lives changed for the better! We had a handsome baby boy whom we named Alexander Schachner. Things went as they usually do for the first nine months, till we noticed he was crawling a little differently and not reaching for things with his left hand. We saw the pediatrician, who referred us to a specialist. He was diagnosed with a very rare form of Cerebral Palsy called Periventricular leukomalacia. We were told that Alexander would never walk and would have many learning disabilities. With three surgeries and the determination that I could only dream of having, he has proved that if you have the will there is a way. He has always been a straight A student. He has played AYSO soccer and Little League baseball fully aware of his disabilities, but never using it as an excuse. In fact in 2014 he was chosen for the baseball All-Stars team. I wish you all could have seen the smile he had when he find out. I could go on and on about all the amazing things that Alexander has done and what he has had to overcome to accomplish them, but there isn't a server that has enough space. We just found out that he has to have surgery again which means they will be going in and cutting tendons in leg and his achilles tendon in his ankle. He'll be in a cast all summer. Then he will have get fitted for a new AFO (brace). He acts likes it no big deal, cause he's been through it a few times before.
I will tell you this though, He's our Hero! He gets up every day and just gets it done. So, I wake up every day kiss him on the head as he sleeps, and send thanks to God for sending us the kindest, strongest, loving boy ever! He is an inspiration and truly a blessing.
- Tony Schachner, Alexander's Dad
So here's where you can help. The family has been notified that their insurance is not going to cover the entire cost of surgery or the new braces. . Their out of pocket expenses total $4500. Let's help them by donating so that Alexander can get his surgery as scheduled on June 9th. Thank you .
