It is hard to imagine a whole town destroyed by a fire, but it is gone. There are still 200 people missing and I'm beyond grateful that my Aunt is not one of them. My heart goes out to all of those families, it is unimaginable.
My Aunt Terry (I call her "Auntie") just moved to the cute town of Paradise, CA nearly four months ago from San Anselmo, CA, a town just North from San Francisco on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge. As you can imagine, buying a house in the San Francisco area is nearly impossible these days with the cost of living in the Bay Area. She raised her son as a single mom his entire life until he went to college, he is 35 now. She was beyond thrilled to call a home her own and officially retired approximately three weeks ago to be close to friends in Paradise, CA (a small town North from Sacramento). Our entire family was so happy for her, as it was time for her to finally relax! She deserved it, to say the least.
Well, that time to relax has been postponed. In her words, it is now on to Plan B....which is TBD. Fortunately, she does have dwelling insurance and may rebuild. She was able to evacuate with only her purse and car....everything else is gone. Obviously it is just "stuff", but it will take some time to get back on her feet with even the basics.....like purchasing a suitcase to go see her sister, my other Aunt, for Thanksgiving in Washington. But, then she joked that she doesn't have anything to put in it anyway....fortunately, she still has her sense of humor and is in good spirits!
So many of my friends/colleagues have asked me how they can help, which is so thoughtful and caring. This is really the only thing I can think of at this point, especially since she doesn't have an address to send her anything. She is extremely grateful for so many people wanting to help, she told me that "her heart is full of love". Below is what her street looks like now in Paradise, CA. This fire, known as the 'Camp Fire' fire is now the deadliest in California history.
