Our Dad has been a teacher, a mentor, a dear friend, and a father figure for thousands of people throughout his life. He has always selflessly sacrificed to help others no matter the circumstances. He has been a positive role model for children in the community who affectionately call him “Papa T”. He has helped save marriages through counseling and mentor those who are struggling, while gently guiding them in the right direction. He has brought joy to countless individuals with his cheerful demeanor and great storytelling skills. He's also an Air Force veteran who proudly served his country. When people hear our Dad's name they often have a story of how he greatly helped them at some point in their life. He has spent his lifetime always taking care of others. Now it's our turn to take care of him.
On March 12th our Dad's life changed forever. He suffered a massive Hemorrhagic stroke at the young age of 68. This stroke caused a significant brain bleed leading to left side paralysis, difficulty with speech and swallowing, as well as bilateral PE and DVT from limited movement. It has been an emotional rollercoaster with hospital transfers overcoming pneumonia and the initial findings of blood clots. It's by the grace of God that Dad survived the stroke given its severity and the size of the brain bleed. He continues to fight hard and never give up. Even in immense pain, he’s never turned down therapy. His goals are to walk, drive, and eat regularly again. We are so proud of his determination and the progress that he's making.
Dad was discharged to come home on May 9th. He has a wonderful team of physical, occupational, and speech therapists that work with him for 1hr, 2-3 times a week. While the therapists are covered by Medicare, any additional help is not. Our Mom has found herself greatly overwhelmed with his care. At this time he is unable to walk and requires a hoyer lift to transfer from his hospital bed to either his wheelchair or recliner which mom isn’t able
to do on her own. He also requires feedings via PEG tube throughout the day as well as all vital care. He has begun eating puree foods in between those feedings 2-3x a day and with continued speech therapy, our hope is for him to move to more solid foods in the near future. Family has been an incredible help, but with the longevity of his rehabilitation ahead, we realize that we needed to get Mom a home health care aide to assist her regularly.
After careful research, we found the most amazing home health care aide. She has 30 years prior experience as an occupational therapist. She is able to care for all of my Dad's needs while also providing daily therapy to greatly assist in his overall recovery. We feel like she is an answer to our many prayers. Medicare doesn't cover home health care aide services. The cost is $18 hr. Ideally we would love to hire her for 25 hours each week, 5 hrs a day, Monday - Friday. This would add up to $450 each week. As of right now, we are only able to commit to 4 weeks. My parents are on fixed incomes, so financially this is a big challenge. They have already had to cover many other expenses . We would love to alleviate their worries by having 6 months of home health care paid for. The total for 6 months of care would be $10,800. This would help ensure that Dad receives the care he needs in order to rehabilitate from home, where he begged to return to every day while in the hospital. Our hope is that after 6 months, he would have enough improvement for mom to be able to continue his care with less assistance.
The one thing that has never left dad is his mental facilities. He has cried countless times over God's hand on his life, over the testimony that’s to come, and over all those who love him. He can’t wait to take his grand kids camping again, to be back at all the ball games, playing cards with his siblings, and drinking coffee back at his favorite coffee shop. There’s one thing I know for sure, God’s not done writing his story.
Please consider a donation if able and please share this page so we can hopefully support his recovery. Above all, we ask for your prayers. If we are blessed to exceed our goal, then all additional funding will go toward his ongoing therapy in order to reach full recovery, medical bills and supplies.
Thank you!
