Terry Holmes Fights Glioblastoma
Donation protected
The gathered funds are for Ermila (Mata) Holmes and Terry Holmes.
On January 18, 2021, Terry was diagnosed with a Glioblastoma that is located on the left temporal lobe of his brain. Terry's Glioblastoma or "Globe" as he likes to call it, is primarily affecting his speech, although it also brings additional minor deficits. At this time Terry is unable to return to work, drive, or do any his favorite hobbies and needs 24/7 care from family, yet has been incredibly optimistic about what is to come.
Glioblastomas are classified as Grade 4 tumors and are "treatable" yet, not curable. They are extremely unpredictable and due to their tentacle-like characteristics there are no proven treatments that completely eradicate these cells from the brain. The standard of care treatment is all in hopes to give him a wonderful quality of life, along with higher hopes of giving him a longer than average prognosis.
Terry will undergo resection surgery on Friday 1/29/21. The surgery will be done in attempts to remove as much of the tumor as possible, while hoping to preserve his speech and memory function. He will be awake for the majority of the surgery and perform tasks that test his motor and cognitive functions as they operate. He will have a 2 week rest and healing period. Following that time he will start oral chemotherapy in conjunction with radiation therapy. Radiation will be 5 days a week, over the course of 4 weeks. This is an incredibly delicate time period where we hope the tumor does not grow or change. Glioblastomas can be very resistant to chemotherapy and radiation and there are many factors that come into play with the stabilization and/or shrinkage of the infected area. Glioblastomas give no warning and, in Terry's case, can greatly affect his overall cognitive function in a short period of time if it starts to progress.
Terry continues to be positive about what is to come and is taking each day as it arrives. He is enjoying the sun rises and sun sets , time with his family, and although it is not welcomed in this way- a much slower paced daily routine.
Ermila has been and will continue taking small steps back from her business in order to care for him and we hope to aid in lessening the hardships of the inevitable medical bills, doctor visits, treatment, and medications that will come along with Terry's care. By raising funds for these expenses we hope that this will allow him to worry less about the "what if's" and focus more on waking up each morning "feeling good and strong," as he likes to say.
Our family has been so comforted by the care and support that we have received thus far and as we continue down this road we hope that you will keep Terry's health, and our family in your thoughts and prayers. Although we are all tremendously optimistic for Terry, we are still cautious and take every minute of each day as a success. If you know Terry personally, he is a very private and prideful man, that has always taken care of his family before himself. Even through all of this, the first thing he asks when you talk to him is "How are you doing?" It is now our turn to take care of him.
A gracious friend has started a meal train calendar. If you would like to donate or purchase a meal for them as they start the road to recovery please visit: https://www.mealtrain.com/trains/84d60n
We will continue to post updates as they come and will share as much as Terry feels comfortable sharing.
