My Story
My name is Terri Weaver and I’m 66 years old and I’ve had MS for over 30 years. I’ve been in a wheelchair since 2006. I’m in the process of getting a new electric wheelchair. As with all medical equipment, Medicare doesn’t cover all the costs. My Home Health United care worker and physical therapist have been working with me to obtain the necessary equipment I need for my new electric wheelchair. There are two items that are needed for my wheelchair that Medicare won’t pay for, because they claim they’re not medically necessary. One of those items that are needed to help me be more independent is called a “Wheelchair Seat Elevation Function”. This will lift me up about 6-7 inches, so I can reach something in the cupboard, refrigerator or assist my husband at the stove. The other piece of equipment is called a “Power Telescoping Foot Platform”. This will help extend my legs forward when I’m in the tilted back position; to stretch out my legs and give me some pressure relief on my tailbone.
How You Can Help
Medicare may think these two items are not "medically necessary", but if they had to live out their life in a wheelchair; they would see how much more self-sufficient I could be with my elevation function on my chair. I would feel more liberated and wouldn’t constantly be asking my husband, Dan, to get me something out of the refrigerator or cupboard. I’m in constant pain in my tailbone area and that is from sitting all the time. With the “Power Telescoping Foot Platform”, they’ve told me I will get the necessary relief I need to help me be more comfortable. My new electric wheelchair should be ready within a few months; so any help I could get in funding these two devices would be very much appreciated. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
