NUESTRO TRABAJO

Desde 2019 ofrecemos talleres de cultura maya-kaqchikel a turistas que nos visitan. Les recibimos en pequeños grupos en nuestras casas y juntas: Cocinamos platos tradicionales, tejemos con el telar de cintura, como aprendimos de nuestras madres y abuelas, hacemos joyería de mostacilla a mano y compartimos el temazcal, un baño de vapor tradicional. Además, damos a conocer el kaqchikel, nuestra lengua originaria.

Nuestro trabajo es la fuente principal de ingresos para nuestras familias. Aquí en Santa Cruz, los trabajos a los que podemos acceder son físicamente muy exigentes y precarios. Además, todo el cuidado de la familia y la vivienda recae sobre nosotras.

La gestión del proyecto la llevamos íntegramente nosotras: nos organizamos, tomamos decisiones y lo sostenemos con nuestro trabajo, sin depender de ninguna otra organización externa.

HEMOS CRECIDO Y YA NO CABEMOS

En 2025 ofrecimos más de 70 talleres, en todos ellos recibimos a los turistas en nuestras casas, en medio de la vida diaria de nuestras familias. El proyecto ha ido creciendo, y hoy nuestras casas se han quedado pequeñas para todas las iniciativas que queremos poner en marcha.

LA SOLUCIÓN: UN TERRENO

Lo que iniciamos como talleres culturales se ha convertido en algo más grande: un proyecto de emprendimiento de artesanía, intercambio cultural y formación para las mujeres y familias de la comunidad.

Por eso necesitamos un espacio propio: una casa para el proyecto, un centro cultural donde recibir a más gente, con sitio para todas las actividades y sin interrumpir la vida de nuestras familias. Tendría taller y tienda, cocina, el tradicional espacio del temazcal, jardín y un pequeño hospedaje. Lo único que nos falta para empezar la casa es el terreno donde levantarla.

EN QUÉ SE GASTARÁ EL DINERO

Con lo que ganamos con los talleres sustentamos a nuestras familias, pero no nos alcanza para comprar el terreno. Por eso pedimos ayuda. En total tenemos que reunir 40.000 € (355.000 quetzales):

CÓMO LLEGA EL DINERO A IK IXOK

GoFundMe no funciona en Guatemala, así que la recaudación la gestiona la cooperativa Mujeres de la Luna, que nos acompaña desde los inicios, desde España. Ellas reciben el dinero y lo transfieren íntegramente al proyecto. Publicaremos actualizaciones con cada paso: cuando lleguemos a la meta, cuando compremos el terreno y cuando empiece la obra.

We are Ik Ixok: Paula, Paulina, Ana and Elena. A group of Maya-Kaqchikel women from Santa Cruz la Laguna, on Lake Atitlán, Guatemala.

OUR WORK

Since 2019, we have been offering Maya-Kaqchikel cultural workshops to tourists visiting Lake Atitlán. We welcome small groups into our homes and, together, we cook traditional dishes, weave on the backstrap loom, as we learned from our mothers and grandmothers, make handmade bead jewelry, and share the temazcal, a traditional steam bath. We also introduce visitors to Kaqchikel, our ancestral language.

Our work is the main source of income for our families. Here in Santa Cruz, the jobs available to us are physically demanding and precarious. On top of that, all the care work for our families and homes falls on us.

We manage the project entirely ourselves: we organize it, make the decisions, and keep it running through our own work, without depending on any external organization.

WE HAVE GROWN, AND WE HAVE RUN OUT OF SPACE

In 2025, we offered more than 70 workshops. In every one of them, we welcomed tourists into our homes, right in the middle of our families’ everyday lives. The project has continued to grow, and today our homes have become too small for all the initiatives we want to develop.

THE SOLUTION: A PIECE OF LAND

What started as cultural workshops has grown into something bigger: an entrepreneurship project focused on handicrafts, cultural exchange, and training for women and families in our community.

That is why we need a space of our own: a home for the project, a cultural center where we can welcome more people, with room for all our activities and without disrupting our families’ lives. It would include a workshop and shop, a kitchen, the traditional temazcal space, a garden, and a small guesthouse. The only thing we are missing to start building the house is the land on which to build it.

WHAT THE MONEY WILL BE USED FOR

What we earn from the workshops supports our families, but it is not enough to buy the land. That is why we are asking for your help. In total, we need to raise €40,000 (355,000 quetzales):

HOW THE MONEY REACHES IK IXOK

GoFundMe does not operate in Guatemala, so the fundraising is managed from Spain by the Mujeres de la Luna cooperative, which has supported us since the very beginning. They receive the money and transfer it in full to the project. We will publish updates at every step: when we reach our goal, when we purchase the land, and when construction begins.
