Hello, My name is Geoffrey Thaw, and after spending most of 2020 in Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Fl in a 2 month coma on an ECMO machine and after many more months in the hospital, physical rehabilitation, and a town praying for me I survived other than remaining on oxygen Until this very day.
I tried to do everything i could to improve my health only to find myself barely able to urinate without straining until having a bloody nose. After waiting for about 30 days I made it to my Urologist for my examination and bloodwork which revealed a PSA Level of 16.7 (Normal Range is 0-4.0). Between the extremely elevated PSA and obvious blockage I needed emergency surgery to cut out the blockage and to take needle biopsies from many areas of the prostate to determine my prognosis. After my surgery I was scheduled around the 1st week of August 2020 with my Tallahassee Memorial Urologist Dr. Francisco Carpio to review the results of the pathology with me. I waited for what seemed to be an eternity, when the door opened and they had sent back my wonderful Mom, Connie Epperson, at which time I knew it was going to be worse than I could imagine. Dr. Carpio came in shortly behind my Mother and said you knew you had a problem when you came to see me, but it’s worse than we could have ever anticipated. I gripped my chair as ha spoke and I began to tear up, he said you have a stage IV Gleason Level 9 cancer, which is the most aggressive cancer of its kind. As I began to cry thinking of my 87 year old Mom, 12 year old daughter, 23 and 24 year old sons and my 2 year old and 5 month old granddaughters, and my own mortality. Since I lost my father at 11 years old, Dr. Carpio stretched his arms around me and hugged me like a father and said me, you and God are going to figure this out.
He sent me immediately for a bone scan to find out how much it had spread throughout my body since we had no idea when it all began. I had the scan and got a call to come in immediately, which I knew wouldn’t be good, and that was an understatement. The scan revealed that the cancer had spread throughout my whole skeletal system. With this prognosis alone, doing nothing I am looking at 1-2 years to live and with chemotherapy, beam radiation, etc I can add a few years to my life which is significant. I had a chest CT scan because I already have COPD and Fibrosis of both lungs(still waiting in those results) as well as a brain and abdominal CT Scan because my Oncologist, Dr. Perez of Tallahassee Memorial wants to start the chemotherapy and radiation ASAP because my cancer is as Bad and as Aggressive as it gets and he doesn’t want to wait one more day on test results because days lost are life lost.
As you might imagine all of this treatment comes at great cost and the amount of life you are able to salvage is equal to the amount of money you have and can raise. I am disabled with a Medicare PPO that will pay for 75-80% of most of my treatments at Tallahassee Memorial, but there are other Hospitals such as The Mayo Clinic and MD Anderson both located in Jacksonville, Fl that have even more advanced treatments that can buy me many more years which is what I want to do if possible. No matter what May happen, I still have to pay for a lot of expensive cancer medications and pay the 20-25% copayment up front to receive treatment. I served 6 years in the Army Infantry Reserve and worked for a prominent asphalt road building company for nearly 25 years. I will be 49 on March 30, 2022 and have very little money or assets to fight this cancer, so the amount of treatment and life that I am able to salvage is almost solely based on this go fund me page. Please give as much as you possibly can and The Lord Will Bless You For It. I ask you again from the bottom of my Heart Please Help me Meet and Exceed my goal of $100,000. Remember it’s up to you and beyond what the Hospitals and Doctors want we have gas, car, and hotel expenses. Thank You In Advance For Your Generous Giving So I can continue to be a living miracle and beat this Cancer Diagnosis, May God Richly Bless You For Your Giving!
Update as of 2/6/2024
i have continued the battle for my life doing targeted medication, maintenance chemotherapy, and beam radiation. I recently had surgery on December 4, 2023 to have a 2.5” tumor removed from my bladder that was preventing me from urinating and was about to bring about kidney failure. I continue to rack up unpaid medical bills that I can’t afford to pay. My most recent bone scan shows that the cancer has spread even further which is very depressing and I have to fight to keep a positive attitude. I have applied to MD Anderson but lack the financial assets to receive cutting edge tumor ablation treatment. There are a whole host of different treatments that I’m not receiving because of my lack of money. I am dropping weight like crazy and will probably die if I don’t raise more money. I desperately need more donations because I haven’t received a donation in over a year.
This was one of more recent treatments from chemotherapy and I desperately need your help so please help me meet my goal and receive the necessary treatment please. May God Bless you in your giving. I will be adding my recent bone scan asap but it’s terrible and my psa is climbing and I am going to die without some more financial help from anyone. Nobody comes and visits and I’m really struggling so please give and help me beat this cancer instead of becoming a statistic.
Sincerely,
Geoffrey Thaw
