At the beginning of 2025, our friend and colleague, Becky Fuller Jensen, was diagnosed with an extremely rare and terminal combination of MSA (Multiple System Atrophy) and PSP (Progressive Supranuclear Palsy). MSA & PSP are neurodegenerative diseases that fall into the “Atypical Parkinson’s disease” category. Progression is faster in these cases, and drugs used to treat Parkinson’s tend to be less effective.
Nearly one year after diagnosis, Becky’s doctors have been unsettled by the disease's rapid progression and are using all the tools they have just to manage her multitude of symptoms. Becky has been unable to work for a little over a year and can no longer be safely left alone.
The rarity of her condition, probably the only case exactly like it in America, makes predicting progression difficult. Her palliative care doctor estimated that Becky may qualify for hospice care in 6 to 18 months given her current rate of decline. Of course, she is hoping for more time but also understands the seriousness of what she is facing.
Maury is trying to make the last years of Becky’s journey as comfortable and fulfilling as possible. He is doing everything in his power to honor Becky’s wish to live at home for as long as possible and to focus on her quality of life. This will require accessibility updates to their house, in-home support, and ideally time away from work so he can be by Becky’s side through the end.
Becky is still a shining light and loves to go to events, visit, and go out to eat. Normal 55-year-old things. While she is able, they would love to travel, which is one of her passions. Everything is harder now, but there is some living left to do.
After a lifetime of inspiring adults and children through the arts and caring for others through nursing, Becky now needs our help. After incurring upwards of $65,000 in medical, legal, and home expenses related to this situation, she and Maury have exhausted all their emergency funds and are in need of financial assistance.
We have set an initial modest fundraising goal with the hopes that we will far surpass it. The financial needs of this situation are ever-evolving and growing. We will adjust our goal based on their needs and your generosity. They are having to deal with so much right now, so we would love to take on as much of the financial burden as possible.
Funds will be used for:
Accessibility updates to their home
Home services to support Maury so he can better care for Becky
Giving Maury the ability to take time away from work when that becomes necessary
Professional and legal services related to this medical situation
Quality of life improvements like travel expenses
End of life expenses
If you are able, please consider making a recurring donation.
A huge THANKS to all of the volunteers that have and are helping with house projects, providing transportation to appointments, and hanging out with Becky!
