Teri Stephens Memorial Fund

On February 6, our beloved Teri Stephens received the dreaded news that her CT scans showed evidence for cancerous tumors on her lungs, liver, and kidneys. On February 8, she fell very ill and was rushed to the hospital, where her family learned that complications from her tumors had led to severe swelling in her brain, which ultimately cost her her life on February 9th.

For those of you that know Teri, she lost her daughter Valerie just a few short years ago to a sudden and unexpected illness and has been caring for Valerie's first born son, Ethan, since that time.

Teri is known to many as such a generous, adventurous soul. Strangers were never strangers very long around her, she quickly turned them into friends. She had strong communities through her active interests in caving and kayaking as well as serving for more than 20 years at the Anderson County Public Defender's Office. She was never one to ask for anything and was always the first to volunteer when someone needed help.

After several requests to set up a memorial fund for her family, we decided that what Teri would want most is to make sure that her grandson Ethan will be well cared for. Ethan is a remarkably intelligent young man with a burgeoning interest in STEM. He has the opportunity to begin taking college level courses as a junior in high school next year. He also has basic day-to-day needs as well as 4 dogs and a cat to provide for!

Ethan, by the tender age of 15, has already lost two mothers who have cared for him.  We will be using any raised funds to first take care of the immediate needs for Ethan over the next couple months while he transitions to a new "normal". We also hope to cover the costs of his college classes over the next two years. Anything leftover that would not be needed over this transition period would be put into a 529 type fund to go toward his higher education.

Thank you for taking the time to read Teri's story, please share with your friends to make sure that we can send Teri off with peace in knowing her grandson is in good hands.
