Telling Odette’s Story
Do you know much about the Holocaust in France?
Have you heard about Odette Abadi, a young French doctor, resister, rescuer and survivor who, with her future husband, helped save over 500 Jewish children from death?
Would you like to help Odette’s story be heard?
Are you ready to help fund a history book?

What is my book about?
In Nazi Occupied France, a Jewish couple, Odette and Moussa, decided to risk their lives to hide children in danger of being deported to their deaths. They saved over 500 children in the Nice region. But Odette was caught and sent to Auschwitz. I’m writing about Odette’s odyssey to this “site of the greatest mass murder in history”, and her subsequent survival at the notorious camp of Bergen Belsen. I use Odette’s memoir to recreate the images and sounds of this Hell. What’s original about this Holocaust history is creating a “Soundscape” to understand what happened to Jewish prisoners. I describe the sensory experience of Odette and so many others, terrorized at every moment by the SS and their Kapo surrogates. How did Odette have the courage to resist the dehumanization the Nazis sought to accomplish? She was an amazing woman, a survivor. Her story is almost unknown outside France. I want to publish Odette’s story to honor her memory and to inspire others to recognize and confront ideologies of hatred.
Who am I?
I’m Miranda. I live in Decatur, Georgia, and am an associate professor at the University of Georgia. I teach, lecture and write about the Holocaust in France. I’m Irish, I got my Ph.D from Trinity College Dublin, and wrote a book about women and Vichy France (the WWII Collaborationist French government) called >Reign of Virtue: Mobilizing Gender in Vichy France<, which was published by the University of Chicago Press in 1998. Since then I’ve been working on Holocaust history, particularly focused on the French city of Nice. I’ve given talks on Odette Abadi at Columbia University and in Paris, and participated in various faculty seminars at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. I’m passionate about my teaching and research on the Shoah!
What do I need funding for?
Travel to archives and living expenses while I collect data and write it up. A lot of my work is already done. But with your help, I am going to Nice to the regional archives, and to Paris to the Jewish archives, both of which have unique materials about Odette. I am also hoping to interview people who knew Odette personally. When I get back, I need time to finish my research, and write it up! With your help, I can catch up on missed opportunities due to multiple past health crises and ongoing medical expenses. I’m doing much better now and, assisted by my wonderful service dog, Cara, I’m looking forward to finishing this book. When published, this book will open up new prospects for further research, classes and potential grants.
How much money do I need?
$10,000 to cover research travel and living/writing expenses this summer. UGA faculty are not paid over the summer and with medical expenses and on-going disabilities, I have not been able to save for this final phase of my book project. I need funds rightaway to make my summer plans. Every dollar you can give will go toward getting Odette’s story into print!
How will you learn more about the project?
I will maintain a website about my project, as well as background information about the Holocaust in France. I’ll let you know what new research data I get in France. And I’ll give you a breakdown of how funds are spent. On top of that, I will update you regularly on my book’s progress.
My thanks to you
