Tegat Community Learning Center

Tegat Community Learning Center was founded in May 2019. It is a resource center for students who are preparing for the Kenya national exams ie KCPE & KCSE.

Tegat is a village in Elburgon Ward, Molo Constituency, Nakuru County in Kenya. It is located on the rural side of the county. 1000 students in Tegat and its surrounding villages face a lot of challenges as they pursue their education. The challenges range from lack of a conducive study environment to lack of mentorship to lack of tutors.

When it comes to infrastructure, most homesteads do not have electricity thus making lighting a problem. This makes it hard for students to do their studies at the only time that many of them are free to do it- at night. This is because for the most part of the day the students are either in school or working for their families, and they can only do their study at night.

The other problem is infrastructure, most houses are built with no consideration of students studying,  and are small in size and so there is no room for them to do their studies in peace and be able to concentrate. You will find that some of the houses consist of only one room where everything from cooking to sleeping is done in. Definitely it is hard to study in an environment where there are people discussing politics or sports.

The Internet is now a big part of our everyday lives, but not in Tegat. Very few homesteads have access to the internet. Hold on, how would they even use the internet if they had it and yet they do not have the devices. They do not have computers or smartphones. This is a big challenge in that they do not get the chance to do research on things that are happening outside their small surrounding- Elburgon. This restricts the students to only know and learn from what is going on in Tegat and everything else that goes on around the world bypasses them. It is because of this that most of the students lack basic technical skills such as simple computer manipulation.

All these challenges negatively affect students as they pursue their education and because of this, students do not get to prepare properly for the KCPE & KCSE exams. The KCSE determines whether or not someone proceeds to college after high school, and if students are not well prepared for the exam they fail and are not able to continue with education beyond High School.

This is where Tegat Community Learning Center steps in to solve these problems by providing a safe space equipped with books, internet, and computers for students to use.  We also offer tutoring and mentorship programs to students. We do this because for most of these students education is their best chance of changing their lives and those of their families for the better.
