4+ years since I began transitioning, and following previous successful surgical interventions which I was able to achieve in part due to successful fundraising, I have recently begun exploring options for lower surgery, also known as gender confirmation surgery or sex reassignment surgery. Whatever the terminology, the main thing to know is how life changing this would be for me.

Having been beyond lucky to have the unconditional support of so many wonderful people to get to this point, it is this support which has now enabled me to even consider this surgery as a viable option. After recent discussion with surgeons and other specialists, I have reached the point where I have all the necessary referrals and the cost is the last hurdle.

The total cost for this procedure is £24000. I’ve considered other non-private options but NHS pathways are currently 7+ years wait and to put it simply, I cannot wait this long for something which would have such a profoundly positive impact on my life. I am, fortunately, able to save around half of this amount through various means but with the encouragement of close friends I’m also turning to fundraising for the other half. Two of these friends, Roisin and Lois, have also been keen to write a little about what having this surgery would mean…

Tegan is somebody who constantly puts others needs before her own, often advocating and speaking up for the most vulnerable in society. She is an organiser, someone who rallies and brings every one together. Whether this is for a charity event or protest, or one of her club nights or socials, she is always doing so much good for the community around her. Now this is our opportunity to organise for her sake and celebrate this incredible woman!”

“Tegan and I met through our mutual passion for youth work, and quickly became close friends. Over the years I have had the pleasure of witnessing the vital and inspiring work that Tegan does with young people, particularly those who are queer, trans and non binary. She has given so much time, energy and love to supporting and centring the needs of these communities, to ensure they can thrive and experience joy in a world which does not always carve out the space for such endeavours.

I have also watched Tegan’s own journey gently unfold, as she has become more and more herself, more accepting and loving toward her own sense of gender and expression. She successfully raised funds several years ago to take the first few steps towards some gender affirming care that would help her to feel, and be perceived by others, in a way that felt more like herself. I saw firsthand the immense joy that these procedures had on Tegan’s sense of self and wellbeing. Literally glowing with joy! She now wishes to continue on this healthcare journey and I deeply support this endeavour.
