With help to purchase air fare, my wife and I desire to travel to Tonga where we can provide no cost dentistry in the Liahona Clinic for several months as a humanitarian service to the people of Tonga. If we had enough funds, we could also fly to outlying islands of the nation to serve those who cannot afford to come to the clinic in Nuku'alofa. We will be able to provide for our living expenses while there.
I have worked for the last six months gathering $10,000 of donated dental supplies to take to the clinic. Over $1,000,000 of dentistry is provided each year by the volunteer dentists. There are so many potential patients that many are turned away every day. We are taking portable dental units to provide care for others who live on outlying islands. Deseret International Foundation organized this effort 10 years ago and is actively recruiting dentists to continue its program.
I spent a year in China, teaching English at the University of Science and Technology in Chengdu. After seeing the critical need for dental care and education among Chinese students, I organized and opened two dental hygiene clinics, staffed by myself and volunteer students. We provided training to help the Chinese students learn how to care for and maintain good oral hygiene. I was able to treat 40 patients each day for several months. I hope that helping the Tongan people will be the same kind of heart-warming, rewarding experience.
I received my DDS degree in 1981 from the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry in San Francisco. I have spent the majority of my career providing care in underserved areas, including Native American reservations, isolated communities and prison systems. I have recently retired from clinical practice, yet I still would like to serve and help people who need care.
