Please Help Send Lucas and René to the World Optimist Golf Championship in Miami!

We're reaching out to friends, family, and supporters of youth golf to help two dedicated young golfers - Lucas and René Saavedra Baker - pursue an exciting opportunity. They’ve qualified to play at the Optimist International Junior Golf Championship at Trump National Doral in Miami, Florida, where more than 600 junior players gather from 26 countries to compete (see below for more information).

As both Chilean and US citizens (Dad is from Chile, Mom from the US), Lucas and René began their competitive golf journey in Viña del Mar, Chile, where they trained intensely and played at a high level in the EliteGolf Tour and GolfAction League, both sponsored by the Joaquín Neimann Foundation. Their passion and dedication to the game have only grown since then.

Earlier this year, our family made a major life transition: moving to the U.S. The citizenship and U.S. History education their mother drilled into them has certainly come in handy! Despite obvious challenges of leaving friends behind and adjustment to a new school system, Lucas and René have excelled both inside and out of the classroom. They have also continued training and competing - Lucas is even now playing as a T-Bird for his mother´s alma mater, Coronado High School in El Paso, TX.

Through their commitment to improve, supported by of multiple coaches in El Paso as well as their coach in Chile, Lucas and René qualified for the International Optimist via the Sun Country Junior Golf (SCJG) tournament held at Red Hawk, New Mexico on June 5th, 2025.

Golf has given the Saavedra Baker brothers more than competition: it's taught them discipline, patience, resilience, and the value of hard work. As they navigate their new life in El Paso, golf has remained a steady and positive force in their lives.

As a family, we are working hard to grow roots quickly here, but the costs of traveling to and participating in the International Optimist Championship are significant. If we don’t reach our fundraising goal, we will still put every dollar raised toward covering expenses for Lucas and Rene’s participation in the International Optimist Golf Championship. This includes travel costs, accommodations, and tournament fees. Any amount helps bring them closer to this incredible opportunity, and we’re committed to making the most of the support we receive. ¡Ayúdanos a llevar a Lucas y René al Campeonato Internacional de Golf Optimist en Miami!

Nos dirigimos a amigos, familiares y a quienes apoyan el golf juvenil para ayudar a dos jóvenes golfistas muy dedicados - Lucas y René Saavedra Baker- a aprovechar una oportunidad emocionante. Han clasificado para jugar en el Campeonato Internacional Juvenil de Golf Optimist en Trump National Doral, en Miami, Florida, donde más de 600 jóvenes golfistas de 26 países se reúnen para competir (ver más información a continuación acerca del campeonato).

Como ciudadanos tanto chilenos como estadounidenses (su papá es de Chile y su mamá de EE.UU.), Lucas y René comenzaron su trayectoria en el golf competitivo en Viña del Mar, Chile, donde entrenaron intensamente y compitieron a un alto nivel en el EliteGolf Tour y la Liga GolfAction, ambos auspiciados por el Joaquín Neimann Foundation. Su pasión y compromiso con el deporte no han hecho más que crecer desde entonces.

A principios de este año, nuestra familia atravesó una gran transición: nos mudamos a los Estados Unidos. ¡Toda la educación en ciudadanía e historia de EE.UU. que su madre les enseñó ha resultado muy útil! A pesar de los desafíos de dejar atrás a sus amigos y adaptarse a un nuevo sistema escolar, Lucas y René han sobresalido tanto dentro como fuera del aula. Además, han continuado entrenando y compitiendo: Lucas incluso juega ahora como T-Bird para la escuela Coronado High School en El Paso, TX, el mismo colegio del que se graduó su madre.

Gracias a su esfuerzo constante y al apoyo incondicional de muchas personas, tanto en El Paso como de su entrenador en Chile, Claudio Jara, Lucas y René clasificaron al Mundial Optimist a través del torneo Sun Country Junior Golf (SCJG), celebrado en Red Hawk, Nuevo México, el 5 de junio de 2025. Su hermana Elena dejó atrás sus golpes difíciles, dio lo mejor de sí y ahora apoya con entusiasmo a sus hermanos en esta gran clasificación —una muestra de la sabiduría que enseña el golf: la perseverancia es parte del juego.

El golf les ha dado a los hermanos Saavedra Baker más que competencia: les ha enseñado disciplina, paciencia, resiliencia y el valor del trabajo duro. Mientras se adaptan a su nueva vida en El Paso, el golf ha sido un constante positiva y valiosa en sus vidas.

Como familia, estamos haciendo todo lo posible por echar raíces rápidamente aquí, pero los costos de viajar y participar en el Campeonato Mundial Optimist son significativos. Si no alcanzamos nuestra meta de recaudación, cada dólar donado se destinará igualmente a cubrir los gastos esenciales para la participación de Lucas y René, incluyendo pasajes, alojamiento y cuotas de inscripción. "El Campeonato Internacional Juvenil de Golf Optimist es uno de los torneos juveniles de golf más grandes y reconocidos del mundo. Cada año, más de 600 golfistas participan en EL OPTIMIST. Los clubes Optimist han estado involucrados en el deporte del golf juvenil durante más de 30 años, organizando torneos locales, regionales e internacionales. Más de 5,000 golfistas compiten en torneos clasificatorios oficiales de los Distritos Optimist. Los mejores de estos golfistas, junto con jugadores internacionales de todo el mundo, avanzan al Campeonato Internacional Juvenil de Golf Optimist anual.
