Marty Mace has always been the life of the party! Happy, healthy and active would describe him for 59½ years. In June of 2017, he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. The first symptoms he noticed were hand tremors and balance issues. He was working in a call center position and started experiencing difficulties operating the computer and all associated job functions. This resulted in him missing 14 weeks of work in 2017 with multiple hospital stays and ultimately stopping work entirely on 12/29/17.
Marty's wife of 25 years, Glenna, has been working hard to make ends meet but with one income they are still left desperately short. Glenna’s home health care company closed March 2nd and so she had to take another job immediately to make ends meet and is earning less than before and no benefits are offered. To cover living expenses and medical deductibles they have exhausted their savings and 401K. In late January, they moved to Mesa to reduce their rent by 30%. Marty is unable to drive so they have reduced to one car, as a cost saving measure. Due to his progressive disease, Marty is no longer physically able to provide any income to their household since Dec. 2017.
The good news is that he has filed for railroad disability, but the bad news is that he may not get a determination for up to 6 months. He also has submitted a claim for short and long-term disability insurance through his last employer. It is not uncommon to have these insurance claims be declined the first or second time submitted and could take up to 4-6 months for this determination.
The purpose of this Go Fund Me account is to assist them in providing needed living expenses, health insurance to cover prescriptions and healthcare deductibles during this interim period while he is waiting for disability coverage.
Marty is a private man and humbled by this experience and has given us permission to share the details of their situation. They have been struggling to get by for the past 4 months thinking that each week the funding will be approved, but in reality, that has not happened.
