UPDATE as of 6/21/2025:
Teddy was placed in the ICU to monitor his infection. Every day they are surgically removing and changing the bandage twice a day, which is sutured to his skin. They are stretching the skin each day to close the wound. This little boy has lots of love, support and prayers.
This is our Teddy. He is a 10-year-old Maltese Terrier Mix. We rescued him and his mother in 2014 from a family who could not care for them. Sadly, his mother passed away 2 years ago from a heart condition. He is a strong little boy, whom is about to turn 11 years old this year. He is the center of our universe and gets so much love and attention. He is the type of dog that has so much energy and loves to explore. May 7, 2025, we took to his regular vet at Cottage Veterinary in Pacific Grove. He had a corneal tear in which he was instructed to wear an e-collar. May 14, that night he misjudged jumping off the bed with the e-collar and his left rear leg came out of the joint, we had taken him to the animal emergency hospital that evening and had emergency Luxated Hip Joint Reduction non-surgical. The next day it failed and come out of place again, then they had do the surgery again which had failed a 2nd time while he was on the operating table thus creating a 3rd surgery but with pins and a band. We brought him home and it was a lot of rest in crate and mild therapy. Pacific & Santa Cruz Veterinary hospital is 40 miles away from where we live. A week and a half later on June 10, the procedure failed and the left rear leg came out again but now the right rear leg had also come out at the same time and we don't know why. As per the doctor's suggestion we decided to go with Femoral Head Osteo Bilateral which fused both legs to the hip joints. This was a precaution so the legs would not come out of the joint again. We brought him home once again to heal, rest and more therapy. His therapy includes him completely learning how to walk again. A week had passed since the procedure and on June 19 we noticed that there was a bruise on his right surgical site on. We then had taken him back to the emergency hospital and they told us that there was an necrotic bacterial tissue infection. They had assured us that the infection had nothing to with anything we did for his care. That night they had done another procedure on him to carve out the infection of the surgical site and will need to do daily wet/dry bandage changes to help grow the tissue back. This poor boy has been through a lot in the last month, more than any family pet should have to go through. We have exhausted all forms of funds and want to do everything in our power to not put him down as this is not an option. At this point we are asking for financial help to cover the cost of his medical procedures and any future medical procedures he may need dealing with this issue.
