Hi! I’m Katie, mom to 4 human babies and 4 fur babies. We adopted Teddy and Rosie - Belgian mal / shepherd mixes last year when they were 8 weeks old. We love that animal husbandry teaches our kids so many great lessons. These pups are truly members of our family.
48 hours ago, both puppies snuck out of the yard (they are not left unsupervised but for a few minutes at a time)) and found a hole in the fence covered by brush we didn’t know had fallen off. My neighbor called me within minutes to let me know she had seen them running out front.
I went outside calling their name and Rosie came back but Teddy was around the corner and by the time I had gotten to him, had been hit by a car and was laying on his side on the side of the road. I feel so traumatized coming upon that scene; he had lost bowel and bladder function and was white in the gums. I was in my PJs, screaming for someone to help. A kindly lady who might as well have been an angel, calmed me and stayed with him, while I ran home to get the car. We loaded him in and got him to a vet within 10 minutes.
The initial vet we took him to was Dr. Kline at Kitty Hawk Animal Hospital and he did a great job getting Teddy immediate help and comforting me. After X-rays showed severe lung contusions, a broken shoulder and ribs, we were just thankful he was alive but knew it would be a hard road back.
Dr. Kline let me take him home that first night because he needed around the clock observation and I have enough medical training to do that- about 1 am, his breathing became labored to the point of distress. I took him to VEG ER and his O2 sats were 80% so I’m glad we got him in for oxygen and pain help. There I saw a vet there who I will not name because I feel she was woefully out of her depth and advised me wrongly. She wanted me to send Teddy to inpatient care to be admitted costing 4-6k a day and could not guarantee that would even help him. I told her those numbers were not feasible for us as we had already spent $2300 on 2 emergency visits and I knew the orthopedic surgery was coming… if he survived. I took him home at 7 am, confused and without sleep and weary about how to best help him. I then called our primary vet — Dr Patin at Country Hills Vet in Bulverde and received the absolute most hop and compassion from him and Dr Estes. They are precious people to me; their whole clinic has loved on us well.
Not only did they tell us they could help Teddy with an O2 kennel, they said he could stay as long as he needed to heal, and it would not cost me more than a couple days - and their boarding fee was between $100-$200/ day!
As of this morning, we have spent $4400 on Teddys care and that number will likely go up by another $2-3k. I know that it was the right call to save him and I’m so thankful for everyone praying for us- but as my husband just recently found a new job and I am home with 4 kids, we have had very little revenue coming in.
Praise God though - Teddy is doing well today! The vet said he is bearing weight in his fixated right limb but has a small fracture in the left that we are praying will heal on its own. His breathing has improved and he will return to hopefully full function in a few months…
Teddy is boarded at Country Hills Vet in Bulverde TX if you need to confirm. My neighbors in Nextdoor suggested I set up this GoFundMe as several of them saw the accident and have been praying. If you felt led to even share $5 to relieve our burden in caring for him, I would be so thankful. God has blessed us and we have always tried to bless others with what we have. I am praying the kindness of my neighbors and strangers continues to buoy us in this trial.
Teddy lives! Thank you God!
update: 8/8/25 Teddy was having a rough time holding his head up and eating and so we brought him some boiled chicken and carrots and love to lift his spirits and give him will to fight to get better. See the attached video for more. Our precious boy seemed sad and tired but we will keep visiting and encouraging him to keep trying and get stronger day by day.
update evening of 8/8; Teddy is eating better but concerns for nerve damage to his front left limb. This could be from nerve root damage at his spinal cord or from brachial plexus injury. If the nerve function is not regained, they will likely have to amputate the front left limb. Please be praying his nerve function will improve with time and we can preserve his limb.
