Technology Needs for Palmville Schools
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Melissa Tsume, and I’m fundraising for students of Palmville Schools in Lagos, Nigeria. Palmville School is an accredited learning institution that consists of Nursery, Primary and Secondary schools with a student population of ~500 students and 60 teaching & non-teaching staff combined. The school was established in the 80’s by Late Chief Mrs. Caroline Bello-Bankole. Since her death in 2020, her children have taken over management of the school and have been updating the school to become a 21st-century academic institution.
The most pressing need is an updated IT system and energy infrastructure. The majority of the students do not have personal computers in their homes and rely on the ones provided by the school. Currently, the school has only ~ 40 laptops and 20 tablets that are shared amongst ~ 500 students. The students only have access to the laptops and tablets during the designated periods scheduled for computer learning. As you can imagine, the student/computer ratio does not support sufficient access for all the students to utilize the computers as needed.
Furthermore, due to the unreliable power issues within the country (persistent power outages), there is a need to have a more stable and eco-friendly energy system to power basic amenities for the students to appropriately learn while in school.
I am fundraising $10,000.00 to purchase ~ 20 used laptops/tablets to be made available for the students. If the funds permit, a solar system that can adequately power critical areas of the school can also be procured.
This issue is very important to me as my best friend, Bintu, manages the school with her family and they are dedicated to ensuring quality affordable education in the community that they serve in Lagos Nigeria. They have made significant upgrades to the school since 2020 which includes overall improved infrastructure, playground, sporting facility, renovated science laboratories (Biology, Chemistry & physics) to name a few. I am most impressed with their commitment to transforming the school into a model academic institution while still ensuring access to all social-economic classes within the district.
Thank You very much for your support!
