Holla Techno Friends
My name is Shane Fontane, and I'm a product designer, DJ, and music producer living in the Bay Area. I want to run a series of Go Fund Me campaigns, each raising funds for a local DJ/promoter/artist impacted by COVID-19 shutdowns, called Tech For Techno. With your support, we can provide financial relief for those in our electronic music scene. This campaign focuses on techno music brand Mioli Music, long a staple of San Francisco dance music culture.
Covid-19 Silences Bay Area Nightlife
For decades San Francisco has been home to a vibrant and talented nightlife community hosting dozens of events that bring thousands of people together every weekend. There's never been a shortage of places to go for a night of techno, house, or any other electronic music genre.
In the spring of 2020, all of this changed when COVID-19 shut down the Bay Area nightlife industry. Suddenly, everyone that worked together to bring you all this incredible music found themselves without work.
When the Stay At Home Order lifted, our community scrambled to create socially distanced outdoor events following safety guidelines set forth by local and national guidance. We came together and danced once again. Then winter came, and along with it, a spike in COVID-19 cases ushered in a second, even more restrictive lockdown that forced the live music scene into silence.
Although the city of San Francisco acknowledged this pain by making relief funds available for venues, it's simply not enough. It does not help pay rent, health insurance, or food for those who work within the industry. So it's up to us to come together and stand behind our creators to ensure we have a scene to return to post-COVID-19 shutdown.
How The Funds Will Be Used
Mioli Music, owned by Emily Fox and Nathan Vain, is a techno music brand focused on promoting the deeper melodic side of dance music culture. For over a decade, these high school sweethearts turned DJ duo and tastemakers have treated our scene with dance club events, private parties, and DJ sets at San Francisco's most popular venues.

The initial target of $2,000 will help reduce the loss of thousands of dollars in earnings after months of canceled or postponed shows because of COVID-19. If we exceed this initial target, all additional funds will continue to go directly to Mioli Music to ease the pain of significant financial disruption.
A Personal Note From Mioli Music
Hi Everyone,
We are indeed high school sweethearts who came to California with a calling to fulfill a dream. Perhaps one different than you might expect from the hub of Silicon Valley.
For over 18 years, we worked to build a sustainable community of artists and dance music enthusiasts. We achieved this by consistently providing safe, creative spaces for people to dance in, express themselves, release, connect, and share their passion for electronic music. Our intention for hosting these events is to bring awareness to our own local musicians and producers - the creators of the music played by DJs worldwide.
We are proud to say our events are 100% sustainable and successful without working outside our local industry. We recently expanded our cause by launching a fundraising party brand called Kausmic. We raised money to help San Francisco people without a home, The Bail Project, and Color Of Change.
We also operate our electronic music label Mioli Music. We use this platform to encourage local artists' development and distribute their music on a global scale. Thankfully we can keep the label running throughout the shutdown. However, the irony of a label is that it's rather expensive to run and requires income from live performances and events to offset the costs.
It's been hard to comprehend how to pivot during these times, especially with so many unknown variables. Giving up now would truly be a tragedy for everything we've worked for and the artists involved.
With everyone suffering and having so many hardships right now, we find it difficult to ask for help. However, if you ever wondered how the artists are doing and you are in a position to help - we would appreciate your support.

Over the 2020 holidays, I reflected on my purpose as a product designer in the world's largest tech market and as a DJ and techno friend. I thought about how grateful I am to everyone in this scene for creating space for our friends to dance, DJ, produce, and keep us connected every week. I realized there must be others in tech who feel the way I do, so here we are.
Tech For Techno holds space for the transformative power of art and music. We believe electronic music culture creates inspiring personal experiences and offers meaningful ways to engage with each other and the world around us. We imagine a vibrant San Francisco nightlife where the tech industry's prosperity and creative solutions to support communities go hand-in-hand.
In these challenging times, the tech industry, more than any other, is in a unique position to help support our creators that are vital to keeping the electronic music scene vibrant and alive.
