For those of you who know, my mother, Valerie Corring you are well aware that she is kind hearted, hard working, family oriented, and a sassy woman who is the last to ask for help. Today we are asking for yours.
On Mother's Day 2016 my mom suffered from a massive stroke to the left side of her brain. After two brain surgeries within six hours Valerie was critical, but stable. While in the ICU at Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville, FL Valerie came to and we knew she wouldn't give up fighting.
She was removed from the ventilator within a week and began to respond to physical stimuli. With the nature of stroke recovery, the doctors were often unable to answer questions or provide specific information. We began to fear the unknown, but knew my mom did not want to give up.
Once Valerie was released from the ICU we knew it was going to be a long road of rehabiliation not only for her, but for our family as well. The doctor's indicated that her speech was likely housed in the left side of her brain, which is why my mom is still unable to communicate with us.
Due to Valerie being unable to communicate, there are an overwhelming amount of medical and legal bills. Doctors and lawyers are wokring hard with my Dad, my brother, and I to ensure she is, and will continue to be cared for properly.
Through these hard times my mom has shown progress and given us all the reason to be hopeful. She can acknowledge loved ones when they enter a room, smile, grab your hand to let you know shes listening, and of course she can still give us the "Val eye roll."
As of June 15th my mom has made enough progress to be approved for an intense in-patient rehab facility. Here, doctors and therapists will work with her to improve her cognitive ability, her speech and mobility.
The day that my mom gets to go home is a long ways away, but as a family we are confident it will happen. We appreciate any help that family and friends are willing to give us and we encourage everyone to become a member of Team Val.
