On February 8th a large mass was found on our sweet little Thea's right kidney. She had been having abdominal pain and a low grade fever. Initially, the doctors thought it was a UTI. The antibiotics didn't make her better, and we knew something else was going on. Her blood work revealed some alarming things which led to an abdominal CT scan, which revealed the mass. On February 8th, we were sent straight to Sanford Fargo, to meet with pediatric oncology and pediatric surgeons. On the 9th, Thea had an ultrasound and chest CT to see if any other areas were affected. Praise the Lord that the kidney tumor was the only thing they found and the arteries/veins and other organs were unaffected! On February 10th, Thea underwent a 3 1/2 hour radical nephrectomy surgery to remove the tumor and her right kidney. The surgeons also removed part of her right adrenal gland and some lymph nodes. The surgery was successful, and they were able to completely remove the tumor Samples of the tumor were sent to Fargo, Mayo, and Chicago (a specialized pediatric hospital) for pathology. On February 25th, we recieved the news that Thea's tumor is a Wilms tumor. Thankfully, no lymph nodes were affected, so they are calling it a Stage 1 Wilms tumor with favorable histology. We are still awaiting genetic tests on the tumor, which will indicate a few more important things, but for now, we will need to start chemotherapy! We will be traveling back to Fargo for her chemo treatments. On Monday, February 28th, Thea will have a port placed and recieve her first doses of chemotherapy! As of now, she will have chemo once weekly for the next 10 weeks, then every third week through the end of July! That is a total of 14 treatments over about 6 months. Please keep Thea in your prayers ❤
