TeamMED Tonga 2019: Medical Aid Fund

Donation protected
Monash’s TeamMed is heading to Tonga and we need your support! Myself and five other medical students will be travelling to Neiafu in Vava’u, Tonga this June, to improve health literacy,  provide screening services for preventable diseases and donate basic medical resources.

Tonga is an island in the south pacific which is faced with an epidemic of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Alarmingly, 95% of the Tongan population are overweight and 60% are obese, which can be attributed to their limited access to healthcare services and resources, health and lifestyle  education and urbanisation. Therefore, we will be setting up a clinic in the local marketplace where we will screen for diabetes, hypertension and provide education on general health and wellbeing. In this way, we aim to prevent individuals from falling between the gaps in the healthcare system,  and in turn improve individual health outcomes.

Another issue faced by the Tongan community is the scarcity of medical resources rendering it difficult to provide the best quality of care for their patients. As such, we hope to fundraise money to buy medical equipment such as ECG machines, glucometers and blood pressure cuffs, all  of which will  improve the delivery of healthcare and patient management.

We would really love your support in helping us raise funds for a good cause. Any donation, big or small  will be greatly appreciated!
