On Sunday, January 20, 2019, the friends and family of Jamal lost one of the most positive, loving, and incredible people they have had the pleasure to know. Never having an unkind word to say, Jamal’s infectious smile brought joy to many, and his indelible spirit left a beautiful imprint on all who met him.

It was with that same spirit Jamal received the news in December, that a congenital heart defect would need to be addressed and repaired with surgery the following month. On the morning on January 9, he walked into heart surgery with a smile on his face, optimistic of what the future would hold. Surgery went well, and he, in true Jamal fashion, exceeded all expectations in the days of following. He was able to eat, walk, and take visitors faster than anyone had expected. Plans were made for him to return home and continue recovery with his wife and daughter by his side to encourage his incredible progress. However, despite defying the odds and breaking all norms, on January 14, 5 days after surgery, his heart suddenly stopped.

The medical staff worked as hard and as quickly as they could to start his heart again in the hospital room, then rushed him into a complicated and dangerous emergency surgery. They were able to repair his heart, but the lack of oxygen to the rest of his body while his heart was not beating caused irreversible harm to his organs and brain. On January 19, doctors determined Jamal would not wake up from the coma he had been in for the previous 5 days, and the unbearable decision was made to remove him from life-supporting care.

Jamal’s light shone brightest when he was with his beautiful wife and daughter, and while we know he will now forever shine down on them, the tangible needs he always met for them as a hard-working father and husband with his employment as a manager at Wal-Mart, will no longer be met. Ginamarie has had to take emergency time from her job to attend to Jamal’s unexpected and devastating loss. Per her physician's request, she will not be able to return to work for an undetermined amount of time while she processes the trauma of Jamal’s sudden passing and the distress of having been witness to the multitude of complications stemming from when Jamal’s heart stopped beating.

This fundraiser will provide peace of mind to Ginamarie and Natalia as they enter the unknown world of life without their Superman. The money raised will allow for mounting medical bills to be paid, as well as the slew of unexpected expenses associated with his passing. The monetary support will give Ginamarie grace to take the time needed to process and heal so she can return to her job whole, continue to be the Superwoman to Jamal’s Superman, and meet Natalia’s needs as she is also suffering. The funds will also serve to facilitate care for Natalia when Ginamarie returns to work and for Natalia to be able to continue her father’s incredible legacy as she furthers her education in the future.

As Jamal’s initial heart surgery was “routine” and this outcome was not expected, we are asking for this fundraiser to be shared with the people who know and love this family, so their immediate needs can be met.
