A Mother’s earnest heartfelt prayer Request!!!

May the Lord give you a mind that understands, the ears to hear and heart to help.

My name is Debra Ransom, I live in Elk Grove, California. I have a son, Dondré Ransom, who was born on August 9th, 1986 in Sacramento, California.  At an early age Dondré was a highly inquisitive child, he was an extremely active child. He literally had ADHD problems. Dondre learned how to keep himself busy, he also kept me busy running after him picking up after his energy and inquisitions. He loved sports and his sport of choice happened to be football. He played football from the age of 6 to 27.  He became very popular and favored by his coaches and team.  Because of his passion for the sport and kind heart, it inspired him to mentor youth. He served in the Marine Corps. He married, and fathered three children.  As well as being a fitness trainer he was casted for a movie but due to the circumstances he was unable to fulfill that dream.

In February 2014, he signed up for semi-pro football. His first game was at San Juan high school in Sacramento, California on the 28th of March, which is where we’ll begin.  The opposing team was playing for blood that day.  Dondré made one of many of his great plays.  When the play was over the opposing team ran into him with tremendous impact.  I didn’t know at the time that it was my son because I looked away for a moment, when I looked back up I saw a player get hit extremely hard, I knew by the hit that the player was in serious trouble.  After about 15 minutes I begin to look around for Dondre’ that’s when I realized it was him that received the impact.  Because he was down so long I knew I had to get to him which in the past I never interfered with.  By the time I got to him, he was up and walking back to the bench. On his way back, he made it clear to me that he was OK and that he wasn’t a baby. Because of his response, I assured myself it wasn’t serious. The coaches told Dondré to return to the game despite the fact that they knew his injury on the field that day caused a concussion. That one decision by the coach, would irrevocably change our lives.

The concussion he suffered that day was just the beginning of the drama that would later unfold including being revived 3 separate times and 2 strokes during surgery.  Had the coaches taken him out of the game when they were suspicious of the concussion, he wouldn’t be fighting for a complete miraculous healing.  At no time that day, did any coach ever mention a concussion to Dondré nor myself and again, not only didn’t they mention it, they put him right back into the game.  For the next two weeks the team had a bi-week. In hindsight, Dondré’s behavior during that bi should have told me there was something deeply wrong. These are some of the incidences that Dondré experienced during the bi:  he kept complaining about severe pain in his head and sleeping on the upstairs hallway floor, he complained about hot and cold flashes just to mention a few.   If he or I had known that he had a concussion from that first hit 2 weeks earlier we would have correlated his behavior to that earlier hit and he would have gotten medical attention.  I thought he was getting the flu, that was going rampant at that time, so he started taking meds which was making it seem as though he was getting better.

On April 4th 2014 he had an away game in Santa Rosa, CA.  On that particular day, he complained to the coach about a severe headache that he was experiencing.  That complaint should have alerted the coaches and have been a big red flag!!!  Weeks prior to that incident, the head coach and owner told me personally that Dondré is a team player and it doesn’t matter what physical condition he’s in, he completes his plays without complaint. Instead, they bullied him by asking him if he was going to be a pussy or a player, and because of his dedication, he chose to be a team player.  No sooner did he get back into the game, he was hit.  That was an away game, so I was unable to attend.  From what I was told, on impact, his body flew high in the air legs spread apart and he came down like a rag doll. I was also told that his team was so busy fighting amongst themselves they didn’t know he was down so the opposing team, the Rattlers, rushed to his aid only to find him unresponsive to any stimuli. He had no pulse so they begin CPR on him until the paramedics came and took over.  The paramedics rushed him to Santa Rosa Memorial where he was revived.  They did emergency surgery and after the surgery diagnosed him to have a traumatic brain injury, a subdural hemorrhage, spinal cord injury at C1-C4, and craniotomy which means they took off a piece of his skull to relieve pressure from the brain swelling caused by the accident. To date he still has no skull on the right side of his head.

Now let me tell you how I found out my first born was hurt. I received a call from my younger son, Deon Ransom, who himself received a football scholarship to Nebraska and is presently enrolled (bittersweet) saying, “someone posted a number of contact for info to the family of Dondré Ransom who got hurt playing football”.  Again, I didn’t think it was anything serious because it came through the internet and not from any coach or teammates.

It wasn’t until I spoke to the woman posted on Facebook that I understood how serious Dondré’s condition was.  I called Santa Rosa Memorial, the doctor said, “I’m not going to beat around the bush or wait for you get here, your son is in critical condition and more than likely wouldn’t be here when you arrive”.   When I first heard the news about my son’s condition I went into earnest prayer, petition and supplication. My prayer was not for Dondré to be healed, but, for God’s will to be done and for me to have the strength to handle whatever His will is.

After the longest wait of my life, the doctor came to me and told me that they have done everything they can for Dondré but it was time to decide if I wanted my son to remain on life support and be a vegetable for the rest of his life or would I be willing and ready to stop all life-sustaining measures. I responded with, “I am not his Creator, and whether I pull the plug or not he’ll go if the Creator wants him.”  However, Dondré’s wife, who hadn’t been with him for three years prior to the accident arrived and because she was still legally married to him gave them permission to pull the plug. They followed her orders and stopped all life support or so they thought!!!  In spite of her interference, my son continued breathing by the grace of God. This affirmed my faith that God is the Author, Creator, and Restorer of all things!  I begin to realize what his wife’s intentions were when she also sent him to a nursing home on hospice. I found out from one of the staff under the table where she sent him because she did it in secret. I knew then I had to fight for conservatorship over my son and by the grace of God I was granted it.  As his conservator I could advocate for Dondré to get the best care and ultimately the best quality of life he deserved.

During Dondré’s accident, I was approached by different people and organizations interested in helping to host a fundraiser for Dondré. The biggest was the “Draft Day” event that was held at the Red Lion Inn.  If you want to google it you can see the advertisement, Google Draft Day.  Over $20,000 was raised for my son but, to this day, I haven’t received any of the profits for that event.  In the months that followed, there were several other events such as car washes, fundraising events etc., that all promised to help Dondré, and to this day, I’ve not received any profits.

Today, it has been over two years since that day. My son now lives in a 24-hour care facility, but my wish is to bring him home to be with his family so that he may receive the best care I can provide him. The care facility that he is currently in, because of lack of help and neglect and abuse, caused him to have 6 more bouts with death where medically he should have died but he also pulled through, look at God!!! I visit Dondré 6 days a week, 7 when my body will allow me.  I exercise his legs and arms as much as I can to fight muscle atrophy. I keep up with his hygiene by keeping his skin clean and his hair and facial hair trimmed. I have learned how to clean his trach tube and have also learned how to work his feeding tube.

I desperately need to bring my son home as soon as I can.  This is where I need your help. My son is in a semi-conscious state, he has a tracheotomy and feeding tube. Because of his Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) he is unable to move his body voluntarily. His hit was too the frontal lobe of his brain which controls his movement, therefore, he acts as a quadriplegic.  The facility he resides in has a ratio of 2 nurses and 2 CNAs per 22 patients like Dondré.  For the last over two years. I’ve had to be there every day so Dondré won’t be abused and end up succumbing to the neglect and abuse.  In the first couple of months, I had help and support from family and friends, but, for various reasons unbeknownst to me most of the support for my son has stopped. Only through the strength of Jehovah, am I able to persevere and sustain!!!  I am in need of a fully electric medical bed and airlock mattress, an electric hover lift, a lift for my van a 4-bedroom single level house in Elk Grove, CA or surrounding area, to rent and a ramp for my front door. I also need other medical supplies such as: rubber gloves, tracheotomy kits, baby wipes, diapers, trach masks, cool aerosol tubing and drain bags, sponges and mattress pads. I’m needing a family law Lawyer and an injury lawyer.  These are just a few basic necessities that are required to bring my son home.

The facility has yet to take him out of hospice which they promised me they would do being that I’m now conservator, Dondre’ has gone from a complete vegetated state and because of his self- determination and strong will to survive he has made some great strides in his recovery.  Dondré is able to see hear and communicate with eyes which are all things the doctor said he would never do on his own accord.  I’ve seen my son being starved to death per his wife, I’ve seen most of his blood drain out of his body because of abuse in the facility, I’ve seen his breathing obstructed because of abuse and neglect in the facility also, just to name a few. Through it all he continues his struggle for survival. With the help of first, Jehovah then, Dondré, his mom and help from God’s people I know beyond a reasonable doubt it’s already done!!! I’d like to thank you all ahead of time it is deeply appreciated and heart felt. Please hear a mother’s earnest plead for her son!!!  I’d like to leave you with some adjectives that describes Dondré LaSalle Ransom.
