July 24th, 2021

I'm not certain how to find the words to tell you all what my mom means to me, so for now I'll stick to the facts thus far....

My mom, Benita Badje, found a lump in her breast in April of 2021. After being advised not to wait till her annual mammogram in August she had an ultrasound and mammogram done on May 25th. She received the results on June 2nd, her youngest grandchild's 1st birthday. She had a 7cm Invasive Ductal Carcinoma or IDC and was diagnosed with Stage 2 Breast Cancer. On July 13th mom underwent a unilateral mastectomy of the right breast and one lymph node. The lymph node and margin tissue was sent for biopsy. The hope was that the cancer was contained within the breast and she would have radiation and a secondary reconstructive surgery in November and be cancer free by the new year. She received the results of the surgical biopsy yesterday. The cancer has spread to her lymphatic system and a 2nd emergency surgery to remove further lymph nodes will be done as soon as she is sufficiently recovered from her first surgery as well as unknown amounts of chemotherapy and radiation. She is also being sent for further tests, including a CT scan and a bone scan. Her cancer has been upgraded to Stage 3 and her reconstruction surgery delayed till sometime next year and her treatment will now be extended until sometime next spring.

In true Mom fashion, she has remained in good spirits thus far with the exception of the stress caused by having a secondary battle of also fighting with her insurance company to cover her surgeries and tests. The copays and out of pocket costs are expected to reach the tens of thousands at the very least.

As a wife, mother to 2 daughters, grandmother to 3, and teacher of 30+ years to many many more, mom has become accustomed to caring for others and putting them first. But, now it's time for mom to focus on the battle ahead and healing. In order to do that we hope to help alleviate some of the costs of the medical debt she has already incurred and will incur through her battle. Mom is a survivor and I have no doubt she will come through this. She plans to get a purple mohawk. If you know or have ever met my mother, I'm sure a purple mohawk is not surprising.

The funds raised here will go towards medical expenses, specialized meal services due to her several severe food allergies, transportation costs to and from appointments, housekeeping and downsizing costs to simplify and destress her quality of life, post surgery home care, and caregiver support and travel costs.

We will continue to update you all with posts and videos from mom as she continues to do what she does best and live life to the fullest. Thank you all in advance for your support.
