This year will mark the eighth year Team Archaeology has celebrated Iowa Archaeology by going on RAGBRAI. The Team plans to complete the full seven-day journey -- 462.2 miles --from Sioux City to Davenport to answer your questions about Archaeology in Iowa.
Team Archaeology is a huge outreach endeavor! Having a ride team at RAGBRAI is a great way for us to transmit information about archaeological sites in Iowa through direct connection with other riders and Iowans all along the route. Last year, we reached over 2000 people at the Saturday Expo itself! This is important, because Iowa has over 28,000 recorded archaeological sites. Team Archaeology has extensive knowledge about Iowa's diverse sites and also informs the public about programs, resources, and opportunities for people of all ages to understand and appreciate Iowa’s fantastic archaeological heritage.
Each Team Archaeology rider is an experienced archaeologist ready to talk about Iowa's unique archaeological and cultural past. Donations contribute towards RAGBRAI registration fees, team jerseys, food to keep the riders and support team going, the support vehicle, giveaway swag to promote Iowa archaeology, and our full-color printed "Archaeology on the Road" educational booklet. Check out all previous years' booklets here!
Special incentive: Anyone who donates $150 or more has the option to receive a hand-made atlatl and two darts with field dart tips, made by OSA archaeologist and ancient weapons specialist Mark Anderson!
Special incentive: Anyone who donates $25 or more has the option to receive an Iowa Archaeology EnduraCool cooling towel! Great for working out, gardening, cycling, or attending outdoor events in the Midwestern heat. Made from the patented Coolcore™ technology, this towel cools instantaneously when wet with water or sweat or wrung out and snapped to activate the cooling properties .
We'll be at the Sioux City Expo with our outreach booth on Saturday July 18 with booklets, and special giveways. Archaeologists from the Office of the State Archaeologist, Sanford Museum, and Iowa Archeological Society, will be on hand to talk to visitors, pass out information, and demonstrate flint-knapping techniques. The outreach booth will also be set up at the Iowa River Landing/Coralville stop on Friday July 24 -- hope to see you there!
This year's ride team includes : Alan Hawkins, Nick Alhambra, Mark Anderson, Elizabeth Reetz, and Lara Noldner. This is the first ride for Elizabeth and Lara, OSA's newest full-time staff members! Support all of our riders as they not only cycle 462 miles, but talk to thousands throughout the week about Iowa archaeology!
We also have a great support team that really makes everything possible. Mary De La Garza, Angela Collins, Megan Stroh, and State Archaeologist John Doershuk, are providing additional support at the Expo and with preparation.
If Alan meets his individual $300 goal, he will ride the entire route with a foam spear point attached to his helmet all week!
If Elizabeth meets her individual $300 goal, she will blast the Indiana Jones theme as she bikes in and out of every overnight town. She will also give a free classroom presentation on archaeology to a local school.
If Nick meets his individual $300 goal, he will ride the Karras Loop TWICE. That's about 130 miles total for one day!
If Lara meets her individual $300, she will give a free local lecture on bioarchaeology! (she's also taking suggestions for a fun incentive, so let's here them!)
If Mark meets his individual $300 goal, he'll blog daily from the RAGBRAI route to give you all insight to Team Archaeology's journey!
