Dear friends, family, acquaintances, kind strangers….
As a lot of you already know our dear dad, dido, didi, Faik, suffered a massive brainstem stroke in April 2019, at the age of 64. He was diagnosed with locked in syndrome, completely aware but unable to move or communicate, and his prognosis was hopelessly bleak. Doctors told us that even if he does pull through the extent of his recovery will be blinking and maybe some finger movement on one hand. Devastated, scared and in disbelief we all hoped that this persistent and stubborn man will go beyond that because we needed him to. As selfish as it sounds we were not ready to stop being son and daughters, we still needed that unconditional love. And as soon as he was able to communicate his wishes through blinking, at first, then very slowly spelling words using a letter chart, dad told us he wanted a chance to fight.
Three and a half months later, our dad has made significant progress, exceeding everyone’s expectations. He still requires full assistance with every aspect of his life but progress is visible with each passing week. He was at an amazing rehab facility for the past two and a half months but his rehab options are coming to an end because of insurance limitations and the impossibility of us covering those costs out of pocket.
We have found a rehab facility in Bosnia, his home country, that we can afford and that will give him an opportunity to continue improving his quality of life and be a part of ours for many years to come. He has not been cleared by his medical team to travel on a commercial flight and we were advised he needed medical air transport to travel abroad. We were taken aback by the cost of this service and we have no option but to ask for help to try and get him to a place that gives him another shot at life.
