Team Toby - TBI survivor
Donation protected
Hello, my name is Jessica, and I am writing this on behalf of my nephew, Toby Hutto. He is 17 years old, and attends Munford High School. This year would have been his senior year of high school. On 7/29/2021, Toby was involved in a horrific car accident that resulted in multiple injuries. The most devastating of these injuries was a TBI (traumatic brain injury). He was in a coma for about 2 weeks, then in a “minimally conscious state” for another 3-4 weeks. His hospital stay consisted of being in ICU (intensive care unit) for about a month, then he was transferred to LTACH (long term acute care hospital) for about a month and a half. Our goal was to get him into a rehab facility that specializes in brain injuries. But, because he was not cleared by the doctors to be weight-bearing, he could not go to rehab just yet. So, he was discharged home around Mid-October. Caring for him at home has proven to be very demanding. We are so grateful to have him home with us, but because of the overall nursing shortage, there is very little assistance from home healthcare services. The majority of his medical care has fallen on the shoulders of his family. Luckily, we have a great support system of family and friends. Toby was just recently cleared to be weight-bearing, so now the race is on to get him accepted into an inpatient rehab program. You would not imagine how difficult it is to be accepted into a brain injury rehab! There are so many hurdles and so many stipulations! The unfortunate truth is that health insurance companies dictate your medical care. But, we’re staying determined. We still have faith that we will get our Toby back. He shows us in small ways that he understands everything that is going on. He has made such tremendous progress in such a short time. But, at the same time, he still has such a long way to go during this recovery process. We are so proud of him. He has shown us the true meaning of strength, bravery, and courage. He has already defeated so many odds. The purpose of this fundraiser is to help with the evergrowing financial burden that comes along with the extended hospital stays and the overall costs associated with the upcoming rehab program. Any contribution made to this fund will be put towards Toby’s medical care and associated costs (supplies, medications, medical equipment, transportation, lodging, etc). As you can imagine, this has turned our family’s life upside down. We are so appreciative of the continued prayers and well wishes. We 100% believe in the power of prayer, so please keep the prayers coming.
