Shane Hofferbert moved in with his sister and brother in law, Jennifer and Chris Waters two years ago after his & Jennifer's mother died. Their mom's last dying wish is that Shane never be institutionalized. Honoring that wish, Jennifer and Chris have learned how to take complete care of Shane who is totally wheelchair bound from Spina Bifida.
Shane’s current situation includes total assistance related to his bath care. This has been a challenge as they only have one small bathroom in their home for 5 people. Because the bathroom is not handicap accessible, Chris has manually lifted Shane in / out of the tub the last few years. This repetitive lifting has put an enormous amount of wear on Chris's body. He is now having to undergo shoulder reconstruction surgery on both shoulders, with the first surgery occurring on 12/2/16. After surgery, Chris will be on reduced pay leave from work. Even more problematic is that he will not have the ability to lift Shane again.
We have created this page to help the Water's family. Our initial goal is to raise enough funds to gut and reconstruct their only bathroom making it handicap accessible. Shane would then roll a shower chair into / out of the space and bathe himself independently. Local caring volunteers have agreed to provide the manual labor at no cost! This is an incredible blessing but we must raise the funds to purchase the building materials, a rolling shower wheelchair, and a tub bench.
God willing, if there are enough funds raised, we would be humbled to invest in a wheelchair accessible van so that the family can also transport Shane. With Chris's pending surgery, the current method of Chris lifting Shane into the family mini-van is no longer a viable option.
