Nuestra mamá, Niurka, es el corazón de nuestra familia: la que nos levanta, nos consiente, nos mantiene firmes y nos muestra lo qué significa la verdadera resiliencia. Ahora, está enfrentando una batalla para la que ninguno de nosotros estaba preparado: una forma muy rara y agresiva de cáncer - un adenocarcinoma inoperable.

Para nuestra mamá, este camino comenzó hace solo unos meses, cuando confió en su intuición y acudió a su médico por síntomas que no le parecían normales, a pesar de que su chequeo anual en diciembre de 2023 resultó regular. A finales de agosto, nos enfrentamos a un diagnóstico y a un plan de tratamiento urgente. Los médicos fueron claros: no hay tiempo que perder.

El tratamiento indicado es tan agresivo como el cáncer que enfrenta. Incluye radiación, quimioterapia y, lo más importante, inmunoterapia con Keytruda (pembrolizumab). La inmunoterapia es esencial para su recuperación, y requiere al menos 50 ampollas administradas en diferentes dosis hasta completar el tratamiento. Cada ampolla cuesta $4,000 USD. Aunque el seguro ha ayudado a cubrir parte de los costos, como la radiación y la quimioterapia, no cubre este medicamento.

Our mom, Niurka, is the heart of our family—the one who lifts us up, spoils us, keeps us grounded, and shows us what resilience truly means. Now, she’s facing a battle none of us could have prepared for: a rare and aggressive form of cancer – an inoperable adenocarcinoma.

For our mom, this journey began just a few months ago, when she trusted her instincts and sought medical advice for symptoms that didn’t feel right, even though her yearly check up in December 2023 came back healthy. By the end of August, we were grappling with a diagnosis and an urgent treatment plan. Her doctors made one thing clear: there’s no time to waste.

Her treatment is as aggressive as her cancer. It involves radiation, chemotherapy, and —most critically— immunotherapy with Keytruda (pembrolizumab). Immunotherapy is her best chance at recovery, requiring at least 50 capsules to be administered at different doses through the end of treatment. Each capsule costs $4,000 USD. While insurance has helped reduce some costs, like radiation and chemotherapy, it doesn’t cover this medication.
