On the afternoon of Wednesday, March 8th our beloved Nate was doing what he loves most, riding his bike, and ended up unconscious on the pavement in the Barton Hills neighborhood. A bystander called 911 and EMS intervened while they drove him to St. David's South Austin Medical Center where he was admitted to the ER. The docs there were convinced he was hit by a car, given the nature of his injuries. He shattered his left clavicle, broke 7 ribs, fractured his skull in three places and broke bones at the base of his left ear. Not surprisingly, he had a massive traumatic brain injury with bleeding, contusions, and edema. All of this landed him in the Trauma Care ICU where he stayed for two weeks before being transferred to inpatient rehab for two more weeks. He is now in inpatient neuro rehab and is receiving intensive physical, occupational, and speech therapy to regain his ability to do tasks of everyday living and to receive treatment for his cognitive impairment. Two weeks cost $14,000 (OUCH!) and he will be there for another two weeks, so $28,000 is our initial goal. We are deeply grateful to all of you... those who love Nate and cherish the distinctive combination of heart, wit, and soul that is him as well as those who love cycling and understand the risks involved in being on the bike. Please give what you can. Everything helps!!
