Dear friends and family of Lars Petersdorff,
As some of you already know, on December 21, 2018, just four days before Christmas, Lars was diagnosed with Guillain–Barrè syndrome. GBS is a rapid-onset and rare but serious autoimmune disorder in which the body’s immune system attacks the protective covering of the peripheral nerves, preventing the nerves from sending signals to the muscles resulting in acquired paralysis. It’s precise cause is unknown, but it is usually preceded by a bacterial infection or virus such as the flu or Epstein-Barr (mono). It affects only about 1 or 2 in 100,000 people in the U.S. yearly.
Lars is currently on life support and being treated in the pediatric ICU of a not-so local hospital. Doctors intubated him because he was beginning to show signs of respiratory distress. This meant his respiratory muscles were more than likely becoming affected by the GBS. From there he will go to an inpatient acute rehab center for anywhere from a couple of months to most likely several months or more. While he’s made some progress since treatment began, the road is long. It will be a marathon, not a sprint the specialists have said. The family does have medical insurance, but as we all well know medical care, especially ongoing, can be financially daunting. There will be various copays and deductibles to meet, many months of rehab, various therapies, medical equipment to purchase, and alternative care they plan to explore, not to mention lodging and meals that may come up.
While Lars’ family is heartbroken to receive such a serious diagnosis, they are confident that with hard work and determination (of which Lars has a lot of!), and your prayers, he will make a full recovery. Please share this fundraiser via social media to help relieve the financial burden and soften the blow on the family. It is hard enough to worry about the life of your child. Money shouldn't have to be part of that worry.
The family is very thankful already for the outpouring of love and support from their communities. Also, they encourage you to leave a comment and words of encouragement they would share with Lars. #WeBeCG
