On August 17, Mike left work because he was not feeling well, and his heart was racing.  Later that morning, Mike made an appointment and drove himself to his doctor’s office concerned that he may be having a heart attack.  His doctor sent him to the ER.  Tests were performed, x-rays were taken, and machines were monitored. Mike was told that he was not having a heart attack.  A mass had been located in his left lung, and he was being transferred to another hospital.  After many more tests, scans, and conversations among several doctors, Mike was diagnosed with stage 4 small cell lung cancer.  The cancer had spread from his lung to the adrenal gland, cancerous tissue was reaching out to his heart, as well as a few small spots in his brain.

Mike started treatment immediately.  He has had two intensive radiation treatments on his brain and has completed six rounds of chemotherapy and immunotherapy.  He will continue the daily oral medications and immunotherapy every three weeks.  His doctors are monitoring his health and his scans.  Surgery, additional chemotherapy, and radiation treatments are definite possibilities in Mike’s future.  Unfortunately, Mike’s medical bills are adding up, and he has a large deductible that will start over in January of 2021.  We would like to support Mike by fundraising for medical expenses and help to make sure that his health can be his primary focus.

If you know Mike, he is a great friend, father, brother, and son.  Mike is also an entertainer.  Whether it is dabbling in amateur stand up, sketch comedy shows, or singing in his town's community chorus, Mike has always loved to make other people happy.  The only thing Mike loves more than that is his children.  When Mike’s marriage ended in divorce, Mike looked for a job to be close to them, and moved to be near them.  He and his ex-wife have done a great job working together to raise their kids who are both in college now.  During this difficult time, he has kept his spirits up, still making jokes with his friends, spending as much time with his kids as their college schedules allow, and trying to stay COVID-19 free, which like a lot of us, claimed his father in September, and his mother is still fighting the long-term effects of the virus.

We ask that you help out any way you can.  If you don’t have a donation to spare, please spread the word and share Mike’s story. Thank you all, and we will update you soon on Mike's progress.
