PRAY FOR GREYSON BURNETTE
Please help support 9 year-old Greyson Burnette, to help offset medical costs, and support him and his family through this difficult time. Greyson has Medulloblastoma and will be undergoing radiation and chemotherapy.
The following information was provided by his parents...
"Hopefully after this update, all the the news will be good news. Some might be bittersweet but hopefully moving in the right direction.
After Greyson’s surgery Tuesday we were brought in to talk to the doctor. I knew something was wrong the minute he didn’t smile back and he looked exhausted. The surgery lasted a lot longer than we thought. He left us at 7:45. He was out by 7:50 a.m. and closed up around 5:30-6:00 p.m. So roughly 10 hours long. We were told around 6-8. I was good with however long it took. The slower they went the less chance for error. The surgeon said they were able to get almost all (98%) of Hubble Bubble (the tumor) out. The reason for not 100% is because he wasn’t willing to put Greyson at a bigger risk for harming any vital areas of his brain. I videotaped everything the doctor said. I’ve not watched or listened to it, I just can’t yet. It was completely attached to his cerebellum in two places and applying direct pressure to his brain stem. It was a nasty beast. Unfortunately, due to the tumor’s location, they had to go through a 1cm section of his cerebellum. His fine motor skills have been mildly affected. During surgery they sent a small piece to pathology. They determined the tumor is a Medulloblastoma.
Greyson has cancer.
Just putting it down hurts. The type of cancer he has is metastatic. Which means it spreads and travels. Right now it’s not traveled. We’ve caught it early. It does need to be treated aggressively though. So after he heals from this surgery, they are thinking 4 weeks, he will undergo radiation and chemotherapy. I’ll know more on that when we meet his team of oncologists. I’ve not googled, I’ve asked for reputable research and studies. They are getting that for us.
Greyson now knows. That’s why I’ve not updated about it. It’s his body and story. So I only want to share when he’s okay with it and knows as much as everyone else.
He will start to be weaned from his EVD line this weekend. As long as everything goes well it’ll be removed early next week. Otherwise he will have to have a permanent shunt placed. We do not want that. So pray his brain responds well to being weaned. During surgery his pituitary gland was stimulated. It didn’t appreciate being messed with and started making Greyson release water. His body was dumping sugar, salt, and water. A reaction similar to diabetes. It was controlled with medicine and has almost repaired itself. If it doesn’t, Greyson will take medication for it. We don’t have to watch his sugar and salt intake right now so that’s nice.
So good news part now.
Right after he learned about the cancer today, we got a call that his friend Dieziel was there to visit. They brought so many presents. We opened some tonight while he was awake. Then Santa came and he got LEGOs.
We are out of ICU!!
He’s been moved back up to neuro, room 9136. We should be in this room until we are released. So we decorated. Greyson has done A LOT of work today. He has stood up, he has had physical therapy, he moved and sat in a chair for almost 2 hours, the goal was 1. He even fed himself. Can you say #LIKEABOSS This kid is impressing everyone with his strength and determination. Each day he will get a little stronger and hopefully wake up a little more. This journey has gotten harder and will be a little longer but we will travel it and fight it with all of you cheering him on. I can’t express to you how much it means to us to know we have you in his corner. This kid knows he’s not fighting alone and that he’s loved. We could never be more grateful. Keep the prayers and positive thoughts coming. His fight is just beginning. ."
Will update the status of Greyson over time.
