Grant’s life has changed forever. My name is Kimberly Moon, and I am Grant Payne-Moon’s older sister. Grant’s life has been a continuous act of service and life-long learning. Along with being an incredibly kind and exemplary human being and accomplished musician, Grant has served as an EMT, Firefighter, and most recently has been serving in the Military stationed in Guam. 

This past Friday night, November 20th, 2020, local time in Guam, Grant endured a serious neck injury in a diving accident and was taken immediately to two hospitals on Guam to stabilize him. Due to the severity of extreme damage to cervical vertebrae c-5 & c-6, Guam was not the place to provide the care Grant needed. He was medically evacuated from Guam early Sunday morning and taken to Tripler Army Hospital in Honolulu, Hawaii, where neurosurgeons were able to assess the situation and enter into surgery right away. During surgery, they removed 9 fractured bone fragments and placed rods and screws.


Currently Grant is unable to feel anything below his chest, and only has gross motor control in his upper arms and above. Due to the intensity and severity of the trauma and surgery, he is needing to focus on rest and pain management. As spinal shock and swelling subsides, he may regain some control of his arms and hands. Although this is far from a surety, there is always hope! His mind is sharp and he is thankfully able to speak and breathe, and has been constantly thanking everyone for the prayers and support. 

*Doctors are informing us that the damage further down is permanent and he won’t be able to walk again*

I choose to repeat that part both sincerely and lightly. I have witnessed profound miracles and amazing quality of life for people with the same prognosis, and, I Know my brother Grant to be a most INCREDIBLE Healer; someone who continues to breakthrough the thresholds of his own mind and perceived limitations. Every detail of this recovery and rehabilitation will take an extreme level of surrender, determination and reworking of his entire being - mind, body and spirit. I have no doubt that the music of his soul will also help him through this multi-faceted new way of moving through life. This is all in God’s hands, and as hard as it will be at times, especially in letting go of what he thought his life would look like, Grant will always make the best of any situation. I know amongst the extreme layers of grieving, that he will utilize his most incredible heart, mind and will-power to boldly and humbly move through this life transition as he continues to invoke and grow into the person his Soul is guiding him to Become through it all.

For now, Grant’s ONLY Job is to dive, so to speak, head first, into his Newest Mission: Mission Healing Journey.
